Mazdaspeed 3 Engine/Turbo/Trans Install?

I'm just curious, because I think it would make for an amazing "sleeper" if anyone has installed the Mazdaspeed 3 running gear on a regular 2.3 Duratec Focus? I know the Mazda lays down some pretty serious HP... and I know the 2.3 Duratec motor originally came from Mazda, so how difficult would it be?

I ask, because while looking at current Mazdaspeed 3 prices, I stumbled on a few wrecked ones... and I'm wondering if a complete swap would be possible (engine/6-speed transmission/turbo) if someone were to get their hands on a wrecked one for the right price. Would any of it work, or would it be way too much hassle?

-Matt

Not a professional, but from what I know about the Mazda/Ford relation is that the 2.3L will "drop-in" but the ECU/PCM and all the other fancy electronics would have to be spliced in which is the biggest headache. I think it was C&D who did the same thing, except it was a MazdaSpeed3 into a Mazda 5. I still have the mag, but even a Mazda to Mazda swap was a huge headache even for the pros. I think it took them close to 3 months to finish.

If I remember correctly, the head I think is different on the Mazda's as well as they have a few more sensors if I remember correctly. I could be wrong, it's been awhile since I looked into it so I'm not sure if it's exactly a drop in.

I dont really understand how wiring can be such a pain...I have never personally done an engine swap. When I worked on hondas of course I had to repin the ecu connectors and run vtec wires and bla bla.....but as long as you have a rod to push the wires thru the body channels for the rear brake and wheel sensors, I dont see it taking alot of time.

I may be mistaken. I havent personally been involved in such an extensive build.

This requires more. I have the article. I will try and post some highlights from it. Mind you that these guys from C&D went Mazda-to-Mazda and went thru hell. They also had to ditch the Mazda5 Cluster because it wasn't compatible. Most of the wiring need to be re-arranged.

OK, so I re-read the article. The newer Mazda uses a BCM to control everything. While the older model Mazdaspeed3 uses the PJB. The two interfaces wouldn't work with each other so C&D pulled every wire from the Speed3 and had to splice it into the main harness to get things like the blinkers and windows to work. They discovered this problem when they went to start the engine after the swap was complete and all they heard was a *click*... ended up being the heater relay turning on.

So if you plan on doing this swap remember two things.

#1 The harness on the Focus **Might** match-up evenly to the Mazda. It was discovered that the Speed3 engine and accessories matched up to all the factory locations on the firewall on both cars. This will be a plus when installing!!!

#2 The Mazda engine has DISI... which is direct fuel injection... this requires a different type of fuel pump and system since it requires much higher pressure than a regular EFI system.
