swapping transmssion between different years

Hi, I'm new and I just bought an 03 ZX3. I'm pretty sure the synchros are shot in my transmission and rather than replacing them, I was going to replace the entire transmission. I found one with few miles from an 06 focus. Will it fit and is it an upgrade?

fraid not. the 06 does use the mtx-75 tranny the same as the 00-04 but it is mated to the duratec. im pretty sure the bellhousing is different. you can use the tranny from any zetec equipped 00-04 focus and even a 6 speed from a SVT if you can find one for cheap enough however the svt will require a small ammount of modification.

Thanks for the info. If I wanted to rebuild the MTX75, where would I buy new synchros from? I have built engines before, but never messed with a transmission beyond replacing the clutch. What is the difficulty involved?

you can use an o6 manual trany its still an mtx75 you just have to use the bell housing off of your old trany to make it work if i'm not mistaken. they are the same trany.

If I do get the 06 transmission, will the sensors and/or sensor locations match? If they do, it would be a great deal. All I would have to do is swap the bellhousing out of the 03 transmission and put it on the 06 transmission...new clutch and I'm ready to go.
Anyone have any input on this?

i'm almost 100% sure thats how it would work. you may have to swap the snesors off of your old one since they changed the wiring harness for the duratec cars tho.

I already bought an 05' MTX tranny for like $40 off craigslist, but now see that they differ from my original 00' ZX3 MTX tranny, which needs it's syncro's replaced as well. Changing out the bell housings, sounds like a good option, otherwise I was wondering if the internal guts can be completely swapped.

As for a price, my local tranny guy costs $300 for bench work if you already took the tranny out of the car, and he wanted $400 to replace all the syncro gears.

I messed up though, because I didn't know what the rattle noise in my engine bay was until after i had my torsen installed and he mentioned I need to replace my worn syncro gears. It was a simple diagnosis though, if you hear a rattle when the shifter is in neutral, but not when you push the shifter towards a gear, but not in a gear. Then it's probably loose syncro gears.

Just want to mention that if you swap bellhousings, you had better check the preload on the input and output shaft bearings and the diff bearings.

I have a full set of shims if you end up needing one.
