Is '01 MTX compatable with '03 ZTS?

Hi everyone. I got some bad news today. My transmission is pretty much blown. It's a '03 ZTS with an automatic and DOHC. Up here in AK it costs a ton more to get stuff fixed - we're talkin about $1800-$3000+ for ford re-man or any type of rebuild.

I was browsing craigslist today and I found an ad for an '01 Focus with DOHC with a manual trans. Has some rear-end damage, no doors or quater panels, but still runs. Guy wants to get rid of it for *FREE*.

So I'm trying to figure out if that mtx should be compat with my '03, his being an '01 and all. But I should have everything required for the swapout after I pick this up.

Will an '01 mtx, and all of it's associated parts, go into an '03 auto?

Thanks in advance for the advice, and thanks to everyone who posted the awesome tutorials and pics!!

~Joe

define "blown"? There could be an easy fix, and it could affect my answer to your question. What is wrong with it?

the transmissions themselves are compatible but you will have to move your shift tower and cable bracket over to the '01.

What Blown is

The tranny winds up between every gear unless I drive like a total grandma. It also won'd engage into 4th - it switches out of third and then just revs. And it clunks into Reverse, hard.

The shop said that I had a couple of bad solenoids that engage some type of clutch, and pretty much every thing else is badly worn and needs to be replaced. CEL is also on. I guess it's not technically blown because I can still drive it with the OD OFF button pushed in, but it won't last much longer. Plus, I really really wanna manual lol

I called around and the cheapest price I heard was $1600 for a rebuild, but they said that was a rough estimate and it could easily be more.

Thanks for the response. I'm glad to hear that they're compatible. And moving over the shift tower and cable bracket shouldn't be a big deal because it'll come with this car I'm picking up.

Do I have to do something with the ecu before I can drive the car? Do I take it OUT and take it to Ford? What will they charge me for that? Do I take the ecu out of the 01 and put it in the 03 or get the ecu from the 03 and get it flashed? This is my current area of confusion.

Thanks for all your help.
~Joe

I understand your question now. Sorry.

read my thread.

illinipo's MTX swap w/ Torsen thread (Zetec) (pics... 56kthxbye)

You have a lot more to change than the cable and shift tower.

There are a few ways to do the swap of computers.

One way is to rip out basically the entire wiring harness and use the mtx ecu. This involves removal of the dashboard, among other things.

The other way involves some cutting and splicing of connectors, you keep your old wiring and ECU, and youll need a tune to change the OSS scalar to 26 and turn off the solenoid functions so you dont get any CEL's.

oh boy auto to manual conversion... goodie... i helped a friend do that with a ford ranger about a year ago and boy did i ever feel like shooting myself about halfway through. we were kinda figuring stuff out as we went along as neither of us had ever done anything like that before but after all was said and done he couldnt be happier with his truck! it might be a pain to do but you will be glad you got that manual tranny in!

no it might take one full day from dawn till dusk if it goes super smooth and you have everything you need and do it all right the first time and dont drink too much over the course of the day. took us 2 days on the ranger with us dicking around and consuming massive ammounts of beer. if we did it again now it might take us 6-8 hours.

being a first timer doing anything like this and it being front wheel drive making it harder to get at everything, going by trial and error to figure stuff out, you will have the tranny in and out at least twice getting it right. you prolly wont have all the parts you need the first time, you probably wont have every tool you need right off the bat. plan on it taking about a week hitting it for about 6 hours a day.
