Planetary gear in the diff broke. easy fix? what would you do?

I hope I have the right section as I dont see just a tranny section. Mods please move if this is in the wrong section. Im looking at a 01 zx3 for sale locally. kid says that the Planetary gear in the diff broke. how much is this going to cost to fix??? He keeps mentioning the diff can be replaced or the whole tranny. which one is the least costly to fix??? I would have a local shop fix this. Just looking on suggestions on what I should do. The car is dirt cheap but has 180K+ on it. Let me know what you guys think?

Thanks,
Dave

to change the diff you need to pull the tranny and take it apart. i was told that the cost would be about $1500-$2000 canadian dollars to do that is with me supplying the parts. it takes quite a while

easiest thing to do would be to find a motor tranny combo at a junk yard with far fewer miles and swap them in. 180k miles on that motor i wouldnt trust it. its a pain just swapping the tranny, easier to pull motor and tranny out the hood still hooked together and then pull them apart.

think there is any damage to other parts in the tranny?? I have a guy who will do the labor for 400. I was told this is the problem, no one has cracked out the tranny so Im not sure how this could be determined without seeing the insides. I wondering if I can just replace the diff?? the same guy who dropping the trans has a lower mileage motor Im going to pickup.
