SHO swap

Ok so i'm coming up to about 72,000 miles on my 05' ZX3 auto. Lately i've been looking at prices for the SHO engines and it appears that they can be bought used cheap. I'm just looking for some info on what else would be needed to do the swap and what would kind of fab work would be needed as well. Any monetary figures or time figures would be greatly appreciated.

Are you going to turbo it because it's only 220 hp. Maybe 190whp or less. No market for the engine. Would be cool but because of Elliott I thought I would mention it because you might as well just turbo the engine you have it would be a waste. Eh dont hate me!!! We have just looked for aftermartket for that car and nothing.

I guess it would be cool just to have the engine in your car tho. Good luck! I would love to see it.

The engine has some pretty good TQ. The SHO was a pretty heavy car. Stock for stock my buddies SHO outran from SVT from a 20-120 roll. That engine in a much lighter car would be awesome. They also have a pretty decent following, some after market stuff.

The SHO engine was underrated to avoid making the 5.0 mustang of the day look bad. 240 HP was probably more realistic for a typical engine, and some probably made even more. I bought two new back in 89 and still have one which was the slower of the two. (wife's car). I think my SVT Focus is fast after driving it for awhile, but the SHO is a whole nother level. 89 SHO's weighed about 3200 pounds, one reason they were so fast. I also had a 95 5.0 stick shift mustang. All were stock and the Mustang (a convertible) was embarrased to be parked next to the Focus and SHO.
The big problem with the SHO is it's not the easiest swap out there, and the transmission is durable but linkage is not good for fast gear changes. (It's almost a drop in if you can find a first generation probe, especially if it's an LX with the standard taurus V6).
A 3.0 Duratec is a much better fit in a focus, a ton of discussion on Contour.org

yeah there is still an aftermarket but you have to figure as well this engine was designed and built for a Fiero type car that never was built so this is a motor from the mid to late 80's and name me another naturally aspirated V6 that had that kind of power all from only 3 liters during that time period. Infact as far as 3.0L go they are making about the same power now. Case in point the Mazda 6 3.0L with VVT is 212hp and 197tq.

Now if I were you I would buy both the 3.0 from a manual from 93 up and a 3.2 from and auto. the reason being, you would use the 3.2 lower half with the heads, timing belt/tensioner, and accessory drive coming from the 3.0L. when dynoing with this setup most SHO owners were making over 200 whp. this is accomplished from the more aggressive grind from the 3.0 cams.

the power from the 3.2 is 220 hp and 215 tq so a little more torque is why you use that bottom end.

have fun with this the SHO V6 is one of a kind!

there was also a SHO V8 but there is no aftermarket for it at all. you only have those for the sound.

there is still a lot to do to this motor. look up sho nut performance and http://www.shosource.com/.

these will get you the performance that is left.

SHO source is still looking to increase the aftermarket for this car so the aftermarket is still on life support.
