swapping out tranny vs. buying new car

Ok, I've talked about doing this before, but now I actually want to do this. I just moved out here to Delaware and I'll be here until December. So I thought to myself why not check out focus salvage about the tranny swap kit because hes only a couple hours away from me. Or I could wait until I move back home and then sell my car for a similar one with a 5 speed instead. But it has been good to me so far and I don't want to risk getting a different car with problems. I'm also just curious as to how much focussalvage charges to install his kit, seeing as I don't have the garage/tools/time/craftiness to do this by myself. I'm just trying to compare the two rationally. I'll have this car for a while, until I can actually afford what I want. Its got 60k miles on it so it has lots of life left, so i figure if I'm gonna drive it for a while I might as well have exactly what I want. I'm just looking for some input from all of you guys...I just really really hate driving this automatic, and I want to do something about it seeing as I'll be driving it for a while.

I say just sell the car and get a 5spd.

The movie (where the quotes from your sig are from) was AWESOME.

Just sell it and buy a 5spd. It'd be worth the paperwork.

yeah thats what I've been leaning too as well, I'm just impatient and want a 5 speed now. If I can get it all done for $1500 I would almost do it. But I should really look around for a similar car to what I have now. And yes that movie is pretty much the best movie ever. "Who wants to hear about my STD from the silent film era?...I mean this chicks' [censor] smelled like the great depression" hahhaha Nick Swardson was the best.

I hate the "just sell it and get a 5-speed" answer... what bullcrap!!!

The parts for the swap cost (from donor or salvage) around $1400-1600. You can also ask b16sir1991 about prices on new parts.

I am currently getting the swap done on my ATX and have total faith it will be worth it. If your car is good to you and you like it except for the tranny... do the swap. I have a 2003 ZX5 SES with all leather gray interior. I cannot find a non-SVT Focus with leather anywhere else, much less in 5-speed.

Just keep the car, buy a new one, and fix the other car later when U get the chance. That way U won't feel guilty, and if U get tired of driving the new car U can break the ice and drive the old one.

just a suguestion.

How many of you guys have done the trans swap yourself? 1500-1600 isn't bad if he really wants to keep that particular car but he'll probably pay the same amount to have it installed in his car at a shop, which would be too much to me for just a 5spd. I've swapped out several transmissions in older honda cars, that was just going from 5spd to 5spd, not even doing a real conversion and it wasn't exactly easy. Looking under the hood of our cars I don't think it'd exactly be a walk in the park. Throw murphy's law into the mix and you'd be wishing you'd just sold it and bought a different one for something a small as a 5spd.

cost of install should be around $750, but no more than $1000.

I remember b16sir1991 had a full manual swap that he needed to get rid of, the transmission had something like 25,000 miles on it and everything else was brand new. I'm not sure if he sold it, I can't find the thread so he may have.

Personally, trading the car in rather than swapping transmissions would be pretty stupid. You'll end up paying WAY more than $1500 in the negative equity you'll incur on the trade-in.
