Motor Swap - need some help

i recently blew up the engine in my 2001 focus. it was the SOHC 8 valve engine i blew up. now, i want to buy a new motor, the DOHC 16 valve zetec. i need to do this relatively quick, and ive heard different opinions on the subject. so my question to you all is this: will this motor just drop into my focus with no hassles? if there are hassles, what are they? i have heard the computer is ready to run a zetec motor, but then ive heard that the computer will not run that motor. So i just need to know everything i would need in order to put this engine in my car. again, its a 2001 LX model Focus, Manual transmission. any help is appreciated.

thanx!

yeah, thats what i heard at first. but then i heard from someone else thats an actual mechanic that i might have to change some censors, but then another mechanic said the computer would need to be changed as well. so now i got three people telling me three different things. so i figured id get on here and ask around. maybe someone has done it already and knows whats up.

Aside from the engine, you'll need the computer and complete wiring harness, transmission, clutch, flywheel, drive axles, maybe some exhaust parts that may not come with the engine (cat/flexpipe.) You'll also need to either swap ignition cylinders and keys with the car the engine comes out of or have the ECU reprogrammed for the PATS code in your key.

You might just want to look at dropping a replacement SPI in...they should be dirt cheap, considering they were in so many cars from the mid-90s through the 2002 Focus.

Really?? Those should be all over the place. Have you given a thought to seeing if someone is selling a recently wrecked Focus- SPI or Zetec? A lot of times you can find a car that got whacked in the rear, the owner took the pay off and bought something else. Anyway, more times than not, you can pick up a whole car for the same price or less than you can buy a motor from a junkyard. It's a tad more risky because some yards will give you a 30 day guarantee- but you'd have tons of parts left over. I did that once and sold off spare parts to pay for the entire project! It's hard to do on a short timeframe though.

You should look for the Focus motor only. Those motors were in other vehicles, but I'd be worried that there would be differences in the sensors. I believe those motors came in Escorts, but the Escort (as far as I know) was an OBD1 car until it ended. If so, you'll be changing out parts to from your motor to make it work.

You can do it in enough time. I had to change a Ranger motor out, in the yard, in the rain, and it took 3 days. The only advantage I had was a cherry picker on the back of a pickup instead of rolling around in the dirt.

Getting the right motor will save you lots of time. You've worked on this one, just check every sensor to be sure all are the same as yours. Ford changes the strangest stuff.

see, i am willing to pay 600 bucks and shipping for that engine. checking junkyards in arizona, people wanted 1200 bucks or so for pulled spi motors. but in the same state i can find zetec motors for 400 bucks. i dont quite understand it. but thanks for the help guys. the engine is pulled and everything, and if i can get one of these ebay engines, ill be all set to drop it in and get back on the road!
