Makes it look different.

Except for SuperTrapp mufflers that go on the end of the pipe there's very little effect from any.

Well, a Fart can makes a difference too, but that's not just a tip.

Copied from said link that doesnt work...

The exhaust has two components. After the catalytic converter there is a part called the resonator, this part helps tunes the sound and helps with the rasp and drone. The resonator does affect volume a little bit but it's more about how it sounds than how loud it is. After the resonator there is more piping then it gets to the muffler (the big can on the back, people here call it a lunchbox). This part helps with the volume as there are chambers in the muffler for the sound waves to bounce off of to cancel out sound.

With this being said, if you "straight pipe" your exhaust you are essentially replacing both the resonator and muffler with pieces of pipe. This will make it so there is no sound cancelation at all. If you want your car ridiculously loud, then this is the way to go. I wouldn't recommend it, my cousin has a straight piped VW golf and it's ridiculously loud, raspy, and it drones at highway cruising speeds. Sure it's fun to hoon down the street to redline once or twice, but I could not see myself daily driving that.

What I did with my setup is: the aftermarket resonator just make the exhaust sound different than stock, and the muffler is more straight through, meaning there is less to block out the sound. This yielded the sound you heard in the video. It is way louder in person too and it does sound different when the car is moving.

In hind sight I could have just changed out the big muffler (lunchbox) part of my exhaust and would have got the same volume, and kept the stock resonator, but I had to learn the hard way. I initially had my exhaust guy straight pipe the resonator and I was happy with the sound for a few days, but after a few days I took it back and told him I couldn't deal with the rasp and drone anymore, so he set me up with the resonator and the rasp was gone! It does drone a little but it's definitely bareable

It's also worth mentioning that the tip size does matter too. To explain this, I think of it as a horn. The piping on a horn is small then it get bigger and bigger and that amplifies the sound, so if you go from 2 in piping to a 3-4in tip it's going to amplify the sound too.

Sorry for the long drawn out explanation, but I just wanted to clarify a couple things. I hope this helps.

Said link works fine here, figured you'd recognize that you had a thread on exh. in the Duratec TiVCT performance section without the link.

Added it for convenience to others.
