performance mods

So i was reading an article in a old import tuner mag and saw a honda civc that was putting 230 whp down N/A. Had all the bolt on mods, including a new intake manifold and throttle body, plus bigger injectors, CAI, header and exhaust, plus tune. Made me wish there was more for our cars badly. One question that came to mind though, would bigger fuel injectors benifit our cars? maybe say, the injectors from a FoSt? I know it's been sort of talked about in other threads but would a bigger throttle body help too? I wish the duratec manifold from cosworth would work on our engines. It just makes me daydream about 200+ wheel HP with just bolt on's. Probably the only time i'll ever envy a honda guy.

I doubt we are taxing our injectors even nearing 180whp and if the injector duty cycle is still under 90% then going bigger isn't going to do anything without more air.

Did he also have head work, and bottom end work? (bladed or lightened crank, lighter flywheel, bigger intake, exhaust, polished internals etc...)

that's what i figured. thats why i thought it would be cool if that cosworth intake manifold would fit our car. that with a bigger throttle body and injectors. more air, more fuel, more power! wishful thinking.

I really don't think you're too far from 200 WHP. The way I see it, you're pretty much half way there. You have intake, and tune out of the way, so now all you need is a header & exhaust. After that, do a high octane tune, and you should be good to go.

the problem is high octane gas. the highest they have in these parts is 92 which i already run and am tuned for. I feel like the mk3 is close to having some good power put we just need a little bit more aftermarket support. it would be nice to have a high quality header specificaly for the mk3, like from fswerks. and a intake manifold, injectors and throtle body. couple that with what we already have and we could be putting down some good power.

Once you start getting into stuff beyond bolt-ons, there's no turning back, you upgrade one thing and will need to upgrade others as well... bigger injectors on a NA car need a modest boost in performance to warrant or need it...usually for example an aftermarket intake manifold or bigger intake manifold... my old sunfire's 2.2 ecotec engine had a gm racing 2.4L intake manifold you could swap, this sucker (almost identical to the one on the 170hp 2.4L ecotec engine) flowed way more air, bigger ports, larger scrolls..and made power at a higher rpm range... bigger injectors were a must or you risked leaning out/detonation at wot...I swapped in Cobalt SS injectors..then had to get a tune with the redline raised to 7200rpm to take advantage of the extra power gained (stock rpm was 6900 or around there.

Putting a larger throttle body on a stock engine will not do much compared to a better breathing engine with intake/exhaust mods for example. Another example of needing upgraded injectors is if you run Nitrous (nawwwssszzz)...then you will need colder plugs, probably a in-line fuel pump booster like MSD, fuel pressure regulator (for testing/tuning).... MSD ignition system for hotter spark (to avoid detonation)..etc etc

pretty much what i was thinking. bigger manifold and then focus ST injectors. that would be awesome. like i was saying before, it sucks there is not a swapable manifold for these.

I've tried to read a bit about intake manifolds and I have concluded that they were designed by the dark lord C'thulhu. Intake manifolds are a carefully calculated or tuned part. It would seem you make a goal somewhere and tune the manifold for that. "Bigger" manifolds might not get you what you want. I too upgraded the 2.2L intake manifold on my coblat to the 2.4L ecotec's manifold. It was an interesting mod but there was a fair share of people that did not like it because it wasn't as simple as plus five hoars powers along the curve.

I think we need some cams for the 200whp discussion. Cams also are specifically tuned though.. there will be trade-offs.
