Talking wow..

So after lots of reading on here i decided i am going to do a drop in filter. Before i did it I took the lid off the intake and drove it to the gas station and back and wow. This thing is louder than my truck intake was. I am very impressed by the way these Focuses sound. I was very sceptical because i have never owned a 4cyl. But now i am just going to drop a spectre in there for the time being until i can get a true cai. I didnt notice anything negatibe from running without the lid. It is also in the 90s around here right now so i feel it would have shown. But man did i pop a chubby when i took it up to 6500. Right around 3500-4000 it almost sounds like a vtec honda.

My thoughts exactly. I was definitely surprised with the sound of the engine when you get on it but I wouldn't say it sounds like a honda.

IMO it's rediculously loud and not a sign of increased performance and not a sound that needs to come from a 160hp car. Get a proper intake or button it up and do the snorkel and shroud removal since an open lid is just pulling in more hot air.

I don't think it sounds like a Honda but the screaming intake was first associated with them since they were the first to really represent hopped up sport compacts in the 90s. My Type R was quite loud when it switched over to the higher cam lobes but that didnt happen til closer to 6000rpm.

If it sounded like an S2000 when its in VTEC and only on the intake side then I'd say sounding like a honda is a good thing but pretty much all 4 cyl vtecs sound like crap out the exhaust side. Ive only heard a handful of nice sounding vtecs from the exhaust side and its because they were tuned properly and not straight piped pieces of garbage.

When I say sounds like a Honda I mean you can hear the engine really start to pull at the higher rpms like most vtecs do. I don't think it has the same tone as a Honda thank god. Just wanted to clear that up. Also I'm gonna put a CAI on it at some point just don't know exactly which one.

It might sound like a vtec, but for sure doesn't have the pull of a vtec!

There's only one true CAI, from AEM.
I believe it's this one:
