Mileage / 2012 Focus SE w 5MT
Just wanted to get some thoughts on my mileage as it seems a bit low to me.
I get about 8-8.5 L/100 km (27-29mpg) in the summer months, and now in the winter am getting anywhere from 9-10 L/100 km (23-26mpg).
My driving is about 80%city, 10%country (avg 80km/hr), and 10%hwy (avg 115km/hr).
I don' t push the car a whole lot, just only occasionally. I usually shift at about 3,000 rpm, on avg.
I'vs seen much higher rated mileage but I can't seem to get any higher than these numbers.
Plain and simple... Winter blend gasoline. Since your from Canada not sure if they do that up there but in the states they do. So what happens is they add more butane, up to 10% instead of 2% in summer months thus giving you less miles per gallon. up to 10% less mpg.
If you are doing a lot of short journeys your mpg will be lower.
Perhaps try shifting earlier to get a little higher figure. If I'm in traffic I shift as low as 2000 rpm.
Shift earlier. As long as youre not in a hurry and have relatively flat ground you can shift at 1500.
Time lights/ stops and take it easy. See a red light up ahead? Take it out of gear and just coast
"Shift at 3,000rpm.."
I shift at 2,000rpm in first, second
By third gear it is down to 1,700
I am in fifth at 32mph.
I get on average 32mpg with mostly city driving.
I drive most during non rush hour traffic. and most routes with few stops via stoplights.
I would restate that stopping a lot is the huge gas guzzling thing.
City traffic with a lot of stoplights and waiting at stoplights will definitely kill mpg by 20%/30% easy.
A start from a complete stop uses up as much gas as driving a mile with no stopping (and starting at the designated mph). IMO.
IE on cruise on the freeway at 55 a full mile distance the gas used it equal to one acceleration from a complete stop up to say 30mph.
No proof or statistics.. Just what it seems to be from my driving this Focus.
Shifting early... clutch wear early
I'm getting 8km/l
1850km at the odo
im getting around 8-8.2 on highway. city driving around 8.9 avg. i usually shift at 2000-2500. i have exhaust and intake on my car.
I have a FS werks CAI and I run 92 octane, city im getting around 28, 30.5 combined, around 34 hwy.
However there is the rare tank when I cant seem to keep my foot off of the floor and I'll get somewhere around 22 city...
i think thast pretty normal
i'm in NB Canada,
are roads are pretty much covered 99% ice atm
i'm getting around 15-20mpg (95% city driving)
during summer i get 20-25 mpg city ( stop sign's every 400m, lights etc, always stop and go every 30 second's until i get to work)
if i jump on the highway i can still get 40 + mpg
i think the decrease has a lot to do with
-wheel spin (snow/ice)
-i'll get way way worse mileage if i don't warm up (10-15 minutes stat up, especially when it gets down to -35 degree's)
-winter tires have more resistance
note i also have 2012 5 speed
