Inspect Your CV Boots...

The dealership discovered a torn front CV boot during "The Works" service, with 35,100 miles on it (2012 SEL Hatchback). Although that's not an indication others will have problems, it's worth checking.

The tech discovered grease all over the wheelwell, and the parts will be in tomorrow. Just a friendly heads-up.

Found a bad one on my ZX5 with 292,000 . Just replaced the axle for about $30 more . From the looks of the boots on the other side....won`t be long ! But that bites at only 35,000 miles !

I was kind of shocked...I've driven a few cars over 150,000 miles and never had this problem.

On the plus side, they could have mysteriously "found" it at the 40,000 mile service, or hoped that the joint wouldn't fail me for 900 miles - at least they were honest.

You speak the truth. I found out my right side outer boot was torn when replacing the downstream O2 sensor, and found a bunch of black grease thrown onto the wheel and spindle. I think I'll replace it with a Raybestos universal split boot.

I'm willing to be the extreme majority of torn boots are found out about during another job, and by that time it's too late. It's not something people inspect on a regular basis.

Agreed. I don't recall ever having a CV fail or even get noisy, but I've found several torn boots while doing other work. Unfortunately, the labor to replace the boot alone is the same to replace the entire shaft and CVs, so no reason not to do the full replacement "just in case". I've seen CV boots fail with 100k+ miles and some go upwards of 200k. The boots (would those technically be CV?) on the front of my 4Runner with 209k miles are the ones that were on the truck at 56k (when I purchased it), but I replaced the CVs on other cars well before 150k, some before 100k.

Stuff happens and they're prone to damage from road hazards.

I am blessed with a good dealer - I order my parts through Village Ford (non-warranty stuff) and they beat the labor costs of nearby shops.

With me being so close to warranty, an unscrupulous dealer could just wait it out, but they didn't. As you said, Bonesacked, it's not something that gets routinely inspected.

Definitely...it is a daily driver, and as such, is exposed to quite a bit. If it saves someone else some grief, though, it's worth it.

Mine was just fine until it met with a broken spring. Shot out of the perch and took out the CV boot and as such, the axle.
