And when you get on it it becomes one of the most annoying sounds ever and even at light throttle inputs it sounds like a "ricer" coming. I took mine off and even my wife's sedate driving and light throttle encouraged the intake to give off the "ricer" call.

Yes,it's an age thing and if your car is going to make loud noises maybe it should have some HP to back it up. You don't see guys in Porches and Vettes taking their intake covers off to make more noise.

Is this K&N filter just the like for like replacement element, ie replacing the standard paper filter with a cotton one? If so, then having emailed K&n Europe, you may be better off getting the 57s-4000, as it comes with a new air box lid,
To fit in a bigger filter than the standard cotton replacement element. Also u can remove the centre cap so that air is drawn thru the middle of the filter for extra air. But I think in some parts of the USA, and possibly the uk, it may be illegal. I think in the uk, if you had it removed when having Mot test, it may fail it, but should be fine with cap on. According to K&n, it offers a much better airflow rate compared to their stock replacement element. Looks very easy to fit, and if you was to have ecu re-mapped you may notice even more improvements.

Vettes are obnoxiously loud to begin with The intake didn't sound "ricer" to me. I work in auto parts. Ricer is all I hear all day. Intake isn't that loud but it is noticeable. With the lid off it was too loud though. It isn't a high pitched raspy sound though. It's pretty throaty.

Ok guys, really? Does everyone here think CAI and K&N actually work? I'd like to see some numbers, if you don't mind, because I'm convinced they are a terrible idea in terms of #1 engine longevity (more dirt facilitates faster engine wear), and #2 performance (no change).

ISO certified test: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html
Bit cheesy, but still good test (conclusion = no difference and probably worse): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCi2yo4UqPI
Clogged air filter makes no change in mpg, unless it's so bad the filter deforms: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/...02_26_2009.pdf

I don't dispute that a K&N or other CAI might make a sound you like, but I DO dispute that it produces mpg or HP. There is no question that it introduces more particulate matter into your engine than a stock setup, which makes these things simply not worth it.

[apologies for newbie dragging up potentially dead horse and attempting to beat on it some more]

K&N round drop-in filter for 2013 Focus?

The performance section is full of information documentation and data proving that they work on the Mk3. I see that you are new, but take some time and peruse the area to get acquainted.

Nobody questions whether they introduce more particulates. It should go without saying that more flow equals less filtration, along with the inverse being true as well. The question should really be about whether the increased risk is worth it to the user and whether the increased risk is detrimental to the overall longevity of the 2.0 Ti-VCT in an actual manner that can be calculated and pin-pointed to the air filtration element.

Edit: After looking at this on the computer I realize that this thread is in the Performance section...

If you do a drop in you have to remove the stock snorkel/silencer to get a performance increase.
