If combined MPG is 30.0 and E10 was used, that means 10% of those miles are affected by the ethanol; in this case, 3 miles. We know that by using E85- we get roughly 1/3 loss in mileage in comparison to petrol. 1/3 of 3 miles is 1 mile, so you're looking at a loss of about, 1 MPG. Now since E85 has the 15% help of petrol, we can go ahead and say you'd get about a 1.5 MPG loss at the most by using E10 in this scenario.

I can see how someone might not notice a difference.

Might be all in my head, but when I use tanks of 89 octane, I don't get the dreaded 1st gear stumble from a stop. It happens now and then when I'm on 87 (both E10), which can be interesting when I'm pulling into traffic.

93 octane is around $0.50/gallon higher vs. 87, so I may try 89 for a while to see if it's worth it.

This is wacky to me this summer/winter blend...in Canada, I don't notice a difference in fuel quality.

In my 2014 Focus ST I do not notice any Winter blend vs Summer in mpg or power. I use 93 octane in the ST most of the time.
I am getting about 32.6 mpg (I have not reset the mpg meter in well over 1,500 miles) I stay off boost and have few stop-signs/lights. Retired so no rush hour traffic either.

In the previous 2012 Focus SE I did notice a bit of a change in Summer to Winter mpg.
One thing is I have indoor heated (70F) parking. So in Winter I avoid entirely the 'cold start' issue using up gasoline.

In my area no one can get 100% pure gasoline. Ir is all 10% ethanol.
Back in the day with my '99 Contour ST pure gasoline would get me an easy 2 mpg better mileage over 10% ethanol. And far better acceleration. Back then I could drive over to a 'rural' county and pick up 100% gasoline. (I would even fill up two 5 gal cans extra) But the EPA ruined that too.

I live in Waukesha County...just west of Milwaukee...and work about 30 miles further west, along I-94.

I can get non-ethanol gas (although only in 93 Octane) at a number of stations between home and office.

I've only had my '12 Focus for a month now. I will begin tracking mileage of 87 Octane (vs) 93 Octane to see how Octane / Ethanol affect MPG.

I did a similar test several years ago, gauging the impact on mileage driving from MKE to Boston and back...and found that the higher $ / gallon for the higher octane fuel was justified in a higher MPG value / more miles per tank / lower $ per mile driven.

It'll be interesting to see if the ethanol (vs) non-oxygenated fuel has a similar payoff.
