Given how greatly inconsistent other aspects of the car seem to be from one to the next (dct, mft, rattles, tire issues), I do not rule out the latter.
Are you really asking if there are differences from car to car?

Newsflash: There are several versions of firmware for the DCT, MFT, etc.

For some mysterious reason ALL the SE Wisconsin stations now charge $0.40 more a gallon for Premium.
I pay it. the Premium is worth it over 87.
I know plenty of other parts of the country do not pay $0.40 per gallon upcharge for Premium.. So all it can be is some rip off by the gasoline pipeline distributor for our area.

That's interesting. Premium is normally $0.40 more where I live but can often be $0.50 more. I wonder if certain areas tax Premium gas more than regular gas.

Keep it civil and on topic people.

This is unfortunately a discussion where each side has firm supporters who's arguments are equally valid and they won't be swayed easily.

I used to use mid-grade, 88 AKI for a while because we only have 86 (high altitude). Then switched to 91 and used E85, which was the worst. I know the book says to use 87 but we don't have it and since it's high altitude. I started using it and I noticed no big difference in mileage. My driving style is almost all the same and average 32-34 mpg of 50/50 city and highway driving. Odo is almost 4k

Car only has 2088 miles on it - first (dealer) tank was 87 since they did a car swap with another dealer and drove it 180 miles here. Car ran okay, it stumbled on cold mornings though. Second tank I switched to 89, ran it for a couple tanks and things were smoother. Now after running 91 we're sticking with it. Just runs the best, gas mileage is negligible since we both drive like hoons. Plus in a high C/R engine, why the hell not? All of our cars run premium now. The Volvo calls for it, the Subaru has a built motor, and the Focus pretty much calls for it. Makes it easy and doesn't really cost that much more here (24c more than regular).

My parents have a 2010 Sonata that has GDI and high C/R but only 'requires" regular. Now at 60k miles it pings like a sonofabitch and they refuse to put premium in it. :/ I forsee many of these GDI engines having this problem in the future.

That's pretty much how it is here. Regular $2.95 on a good day, Midgrade being $3.09, Premium being $3.35 or something.

I found two stations near my college campus (BP, GetGo) that sometimes have better prices, where Regular is usually within +-10c of near my home.

The Giant Eagle GetGo station always charges +$0.10 per midgrade/premium but premium is only 92 octane and it's off brand gas.

I just fill up with 89 now when the BP station charges more for Premium, sometimes it's 10-15 cents more than midgrade and other times it's 25.
