Just went out and did this--5 minute job and with the K&N, it sounds MUCH better. Free mods FTW

Just curious as I just got my Focus last week, is this strictly a sound modification or does it change fuel economy and/or performance?

Has anybody tried drilling a couple of strategically-placed holes--say 1-1/2" diameter--in the airbox lid to aid in air flow/sound levels?

I put in a drop in K&N and drilled 4 1/2" holes in the lower front of the airbox and one in the bottom. Got the acceleration growl and a 1mpg improvement. 2 weeks later I drill several holes and a couple of big ovals in the top plastic shield covering the standard intake - Big holes on the passenger side clear of the rubber seal strip and several small holes just in front of the rubber seal. That yieled another 1mpg.

If you drill into your airbox, use a standard hole plug size in case you don't like it. I'm happy with mine - at least until I get a cat back. I can feel the acceleration improvement and verified the mpg improvement.

Pulled the top off with the k&n drop in last night. Sounds real good at some rpms, may be a little much at WOT, though. I do like that I can easily go back and forth depending on my mood, but I can see how it may cause some heat soak on hot days. Maybe I'll make a little heat sheild for it.

Old thread but I'm at the point of wanting to do some basic mods.

I'm confused as to how the stock setup is any different from an aftermarket CAI system? RED above said:

Why would you need/want to get a full intake? Or, what do you mean by "full intake"?

Full intake such as Steeda's or K&N's intake or AEM intake. When I did this the car had no after market options other then a drop in filter.

By "full intake" he means like Steeda & K&N, where they replace the stock tubing with a less constrictive tube than stock. Less constrictive=better airflow.
