Camshaft/ecu tune

I'm new to builds of any kind, besides basic bolt ons. I'm preparing to get Crower/Massive camshafts and CP forged pistons. Why is ecu tuning necessary after a cam upgrade? Also, is it required to run higher octane fuel? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just want a streetable car, mainly just wanting to upgrade the engine with stronger parts because I'm going to have it a long time.

For a DD, Just add the cams & forget about the pistons, besides if your doing pistons, I'd add rods too. For all that work w/ the motor out, Why not a 23? Add the cams & a header, cai or sai & a tune.

As I said I'm new to a serious build. I have to weigh everything against a tight budget. I feel it needs to be stronger I put about 17k miles a year on the car, I want it to be fun to drive but durable for the long haul.

These mzr/d-tech motors are pretty light & stout. I have a 23 w/ a lot of mods & haven't done rods/pistons. Rods/pistons= about $700 to start. Would you do those yourself? For the price of rods/pistons & other things, your at a 23 motor price. You'll never get 23 grunt out of a 20. If you want add a 23 head w/ a set of mild cams to your 20. How far do you want to go?

To get the most out of cams your ecu which controls everything the motor does and sees needs to be adjusted for all the inputs the modifications have generated. Do one thing at a time, cold air, exhaust, cams, tune. Go with Tom, money well spent to put it all together with his tune.

More to think about , do a 2.5 built short block , 2.3 head , stock cams , good header and exh as well as intake , 2.3 intake manifold and this will make a very torque engine for the street and on a budget

You seem to have quite the rep, Tom. Thanks for the feedback. I will be in touch when I decide and get things coming in. Should get the ball rolling soon. Once again Thanks!
