15 ST muffler on a mk1

Anyone ever get rid of the spare tire well to install a center exit exhaust like the new ST's? Ive read about a lot of honda and bmw people doing it, wondering if any foci owners have taken the plunge? Its not about weight savings, just want the extra room so i can mount the muffler where i want it. Got an almost new ST muffler for free and am contemplating cutting out the well and welding a piece of 18 gauge over the hole.

Why not just buy the center exit exhaust for an MKI? Seems a LOT easier and more practical. If this is your DD, what are you going to do if you get a flat driving down the road?

because thats boring, i can do this for free. and id just keep the spare in the back, i never transport anything or anyone in the focus, thats what our other cars are for. im not asking if i SHOULD do it, im just seeing if anyone has done it. Its a cheap car and id rather fabricate and do my own thing to my car rather than just buying premade, easy install stuff that everyone has.

Yea you could do that, to me not really worth the time vs what you get out of it. I made mine bigger to hold a svt size wheel/tire assembly.

IDK how it'd fit without removing the wheel well, you might want to hold it up there to check.

A few did a dual exh. using a Camaro dual exit muffler hung in the same area without deleting the tire well, so it might be possible to do it with the ST muffler as well.

That Mod would have old threads here for reference. Check in MkI section & zetec performance, don't remember where those threads were located.

itll fit, i just need to weld a little 90 degree piece in. i could mount it without removing the spare well but it hangs low enough to where i know i would eventually tear it off with the right speed bump

What is your current setup, is your car or at least your exhaust stock currently? I just dont know the point of adding the ST muffler other than just being a project. The exhaust is quiet already from the factory and some even remove the last muffler (lunch box) in the exhaust system for a more sporty sound. The 05-07 ST's actually came from Ford with out that last muffler. Now if you have added a turbo or header and the noise level increases, having an extra muffler there would be a plus.

Adding a center exit is cool and I like that you wanting to try something different. What are you planning on doing for your bumper? Are you going to swap to a center exit one or modify yours to have center exit?

Here is the Ford link for when they offered one, they also list the part # for the center exit bumper and insert (all of which are discontinued now) but should give you an idea of how they ran the setup. Again, notice there is not muffler after the rear subframe.

ive got stock exhaust, chopped off the lunchbox and didnt realize till afterwards that the previous owner had replaced the last muffler with a piece of straight pipe, so its just loud and i got the ST muffler for free.
as far as the bumper im just going to remove the center portion of the bottom third from the stock exhaust exit to the same distance from the opposite side. my bumper is already cracked in that area from the previous owner so i have no qualms about chopping it up. i was thinking about sourcing an ST or other center exit valance and rigging it to another bumper or just purchasing a premade bumper

Have you seen this thread? Might give you some inspiration on what you can do once you start cutting and Frankensteining different bumpers together:
