Removing the system will just set even more codes, no known (to me) way to delete it without it doing so. Never mind the federal law against doing so, but that is neither here nor there.

I am in the same boat as you, have a car from California but live in Illinois. While I do have every other year emission checks the PZEV equipment is not mandated on cars that are originally sold in the state BUT if the car is originally sold with it the parts legally need to stay on the car.

But for diagnosing the air injection system check out this thread 2007 ford focus se P0410 P0490 codes (Air Pump System) , and specifically this secondary air injection diagnosis post in it. It will most likely be a bad pump, bad diverter valve, or possibly a blown fuse, I have had all three happen on my car. Enjoy.

Talk to Tom, he should be able to turn all of the PZEV junk off. That's my plan on my wagon- its got 171k and every. single. hose. is cracked/ rotten. id rather rip it all out than pay to replace it all.

also, start with the pump and junk on top of the coolant block and remove the vac lines as you go, cap any nipples on the intake manifold as you go along

Air injection requires a special exh. manifold gasket, changing to the std. one blocks it off completely without being externally apparent if desired.
