Headers and Cat

Hello guys I'm finally doing headers on my 07 ZX5 and was wondering when I purchase them will my Catalytic Converter still be on and passable for emissions after a good tune? Not familiar with exhaust and headers since this is my first modded car.

On a 2007, the main catalytic converter is built into the stock exhaust manifold/header, also known as a mani-cat (Manifold + Catylitic Converter.)

On some models there is a secondary Cat built into the exhaust after the flexpipe but this is for PZEV versions and probably not significant.

Also, with a proper header you will have CEL turned on from the removal of the stock manifold. The stock exhaust system uses a EGR (exhaust gas recirculate) which all aftermarket headers block off. There is also going to a CEL from missing O2 sensors, as most focus have 2-3 and most headers only come with a bung for one. The CELs mentioned in this paragraph can be removed via a tune though. A tune is strongly recommended when adding a header.

Unless you know some shop to pass you, you will not get your fancy VA window sticker without the cat. You can add an aftermarket one, just match the diameter to the header piping. My buddy was able to pass in his high 500hp turbo m3 after adding a 3" cat to his setup

Ok questions how will this work for replacing the existing Cat,it has a O2 sensor location as well. I'm sure it would need some fab work since the exhaust is 2.5"

They also have a direct fit Cat

Like Stephen mentioned, you can install a header, to turn off the cel, you'll need a tune to turn off the cel. If they just plug into the obd2 & check for codes, no issues then. A header needs a tune, simple enough.
