What's an example of an intake that isn't cold air?

Any one that sucks in air from the engine compartment?

So if someone around here shows pictures of his "cold air intake" with the filter in the engine compartment, then he's calling it by the wrong name?

Pretty much. The air in the engine compartment is not considered cold air. The reason for all the OEM ducting is to pull in air from outside the engine compartment. Just sticking a cone filter on the intake and sucking in engine compartment air would be cheaper and look sexier. So why does the manufacturer go through the extra expense? Performance.

Now I do not believe the "lifetime" stock filter is a "forever" filter. I assume that sometime the gauge will show a restriction and I'll have to replace it. Glad there is a reasonable replacement.

As a side question, has anyone ever seen the air filter gauge show a restriction?

If a filter is open and in the engine bay, it is a SRI (short ram intake).

Got'cha. I've seen CAI and short ram thrown around. I used to have a short ram on my Chevy Aveo, and I remember there was a larger kit available with ducts to the underside of the car.

My "lifetime" air filter has 162,000 miles on it, and the car doesn't perform well under load, like when the A/C is running. But no, I've never seen that gauge move a micron.

I can't recall anyone ever saying it has moved. Ever.

Yeah it is. And IMO it seems to me just dropping a K&N in there will do about the same as a CAI (except for the noise factor).

As near as I can tell, the expected "lifetime" is 150,000 miles depending on conditions.

These "recording" filter monitors have a rep for lasting, but I'm sure any individual one could go bad.

When I first got my 2007 I was surprised by this lifetime filter concept. I looked but could not find what I consider a "reliable" report of a clogged lifetime filter. Maybe one of our Ford techs have ran into one? I'm sure it has to happen sooner or later. My '07 has ~85,000 so I guess I have a while. I'm surprised it took this long for some company to offer a replacement to the OEM.

Does the Doorman replacement solve the the potential hydro lock issue?
