I searched the forum and liked the way people reacted to the lunchbox delete. I am thinking about having it removed and a tip put on it. The only thing I am worrysome about is the California laws and the smog test.
I checked the DMV online, ( http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27150.htm ) and it basically says a vehicle must have a muffler preset. Will the first muffler be adequite to pass this test if the lunchbox is gone?
Also, it says somewhere else that a car under 6000 lbs shouldn't exhibit sound above 95 dB. Will removing the lunchbox make that much noise?
lastly, I was wondering if it will pass the smog test next time. My dad is a real ogre about modifying anything from stock (esp. if it makes it worse).
FYI: Stock 05 zx3 (want a nice sound, but have no $$$) [wrenchin]
hahah... he has an ST... ST foci dont have a "lunchbox"... anyways, it WILL pass emissions and it WILL NOT be louder than 95dB... it does sound fairly nice too... let me look I have a short video of my car when I had just the muffler cut off... btw, you dont HAVE to put a tip on (thats how i did mine) I'll be back with a clip...
well it's up to you... I liked it for a little bit... but then wanted a change... so I got a glass pack [rolleyes] and now I have a full 2.5" Magnaflow Catback and it's nice [thumb]
could you post a sound clip of your magnaflow catback? I want to do an exhaust on my 07 duratec 2.0 but i want something that sounds throaty and not raspy![headbang] I was thinking of the lunchbox delete with a nice chrome tip but hearing that sound clip sounds a bit too annoying.

dude you should definately get a Magnaflow... it's throaty and not raspy... you'll like it better than Borla if thats what ur after and u can get it for like $240 shipped on www.trubendz.com
i deleted the lunch box on my zx3 and it wasnt loud enough now i have the borla cat back system and im satisfied with its low tone exhuast note not one bit ricer sounding.
sorry for double post but if i just get a saw and cut the lunchbox off and start it, will it sound nice? i have 2007 2.0 duratec with steeda intake sooo
what is the difference between aluminum and stainless steel? what is the reason behind a high flow cat magnaflow is it better than the non-hiflow magnaflow?
u DONT need a high-flow cat... just gonna cost u more... UNLESS, u live in a green state then u NEED the high flow... stainless steel wont rust but as long as u take care of it, neither will the aluminized steel...
Does anyone have a 'buzz' in the exhaust system concentrated around 3000 RPM? My car has a stainless cat-back exhaust and a 4 into 1 race header (no cat), and it has a nice 'buzz' either in the exhaust note, or possibly just something that resonates around 3 grand.
^^^^ i have to agree with Rand, aluminized only lasts about 5-6 years. if want this to be your one and only exhaust you ever have to buy, go with the stainless one.
I did the "lunch box removal" prior to getting my MBRP exhaust. It sounded pretty good, wth a nice little "burble" to it. Not ricey at all. Had a local mom & pop exhaust shop do it for me. They cut it off, bent a new pipe and welded it on & I also had a nice stainless double wall tip welded on. Think it cost me around $50 for everything.
I know people will automatically chime in and say, "just get a complete exhaust". I have to agree with them, but unless they are paying the bills, do what you can when you can. Myself, both my children are in college, so you can see where my extra money goes to. Sometimes it kills me when those checks go out every month. I could easily take care of a Focus Sport Stage 2 turbo setup with new heavy duty rods, pistons, crank, valves, etc in about 3 months time. As I said earlier, due what you can when you can, & if dad is paying some of the bills, well you best behave yourself...[dunno]
