Angry Sync 3 CarPlay/Android Auto update?

I bought a 2016 Titanium Hatch about 3 months ago and was told by the dealership that the update would be out in summer. We all know that didn't happen and now its "this year". Well that is almost over. I just got off the phone with the SYNC department which told me a few things:

1) We don't know when it will be available so we can't tell you.
2) When it is updated the Sync3 will tell you. (is this true I haven't seen any updates since I got the car)
3) CarPlay will require hardware installation by the dealership which may or may not cost you anything but the SYNC team doesn't deal with hardware.(Huh? What?)
4) Only the dealership can tell me if it will or will not cost me anything because Ford doesn't have that information. (Again, WTF?)

I asked who I could get information on the hardware from and they responded with "Ford does not have this information you will have to contact a dealership".

I asked if they meant their team at Ford doesn't have it or Ford as a whole doesn't have it. They put me on hold and then after about 3-4mins the call was disconnected.

I feel like I am getting scammed as I could have purchased a lower trim level with out this and got an aftermarket CarPlay deck but the dealership insisted it would be available for me shortly. The run around on this is so damn frustrating. I hope to god it won't be like this if I have an actual major warranty issue.

Also frustrated. Would appreciate a clear, detailed, definitive reply from the Ford IVT team on this.

Rule #1: Never trust a word out of a car salesmen's mouth. Not saying they're all crooks, but you MUST do your due diligence. Imagine buying a house and the current owner saying "Nah no termite problems. No need for an inspection." Exact same situation. Once the deal is done, anything not in writing never happened.

If an update did require additional hardware you can bet your ass that you're going to be footing the bill, warranty or not.

Hey Everyone,

I understand your frustrations of having to wait longer than anticipated for the update. The update is due to be released by the end of the year. Android Auto will only consist of a software update. Apple CarPlay will require a software update, as well as, a dealer installed hardware upgrade. The IVT department has not been informed of the cost for the hardware, but the dealers may possibly know. Your patience is much appreciated! To get CarPlay to work you will need SYNC3 v2.0 and a new USB. The USB is about $55 for a F-150, not sure if that part(GJ7Z-19A387-B) will fit a Focus. The current version of SYNC3 in the Focus is 1.1, it's a dealer install. My guess is we'll get CarPlay/Android Auto when v2.1 is ready, a merge of v1.1 and v2.0.

Cara, my dealer is as much in the dark as I am. At the time I began a 2016 lease for a Focus Titanium, I was assured carplay would be available by early summer. Really galls me no communication has been forthcoming from Ford about the nature of the delays, or about what to expect when CP eventually makes it into the 2016 models. I will remember this communication fiasco at the conclusion of my lease in 2019.

2stepbay,

I certainly understand your frustration of having to wait longer than anticipated. We haven't been informed of any changes, so the update should still be released by the end of the month.

The frustration I feel is specifically due to Ford's lack of timely communication. I understand the nature of delays and can adapt accordingly. I rather see something done right than rushed to meet a dead-line. However, more transparency (monthly update perhaps) by Ford about this eventual installation/integration of Carplay in the 2016 models would be most welcomed.

Further, the existing Sync 3 system is still at version 1.0 and has software bugs. IMO these ought to have been addressed months ago rather than waiting for the introduction of 3rd party add-ons.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I've passed on everyone's concerns and frustrations regarding the release of the update because I know ya'll have been patiently waiting.
