Help in deciding what to get. 2013 Ford Focus Hatchback

Went to a local audio place today. They said they would sell, and install, four 5x7 Memphis speakers, a 12" Memphis subwoofer, and a 300 watt amp for $895. If I go with this I'll probably upgrade to two 12" Memphis subs. Is this a good deal? Also, should I get an amp for the door speakers? (I don't know much about car audio) Thank you in advance. :)

Your car audio place apparently doesn't know what size speakers are in your car - many older Fords had 5X7" speakers, but your car has 6 1/2" round speakers in both the front and rear doors. And you have tweeters in the sail area (the area where the outside mirrors are attached). Suggest you get a good set of 6 1/2" component speakers. If your car audio place is steering you wrong on the speakers, I wouldn't trust them for anything else.

All I have done to my car audio is add a single 15 inch Kicker Comp R sub, with a JL Audio 1000 watt mono amp. Everything else is the same. I did this myself, for total cost of around 500. Eventually maybe ill upgrade the door speakers and tweeters, but that will mostly happen in a couple of years when they blow. I also did the big 3 upgrade.

I dont see a need to fix what isnt broken, I'd just add the subs you want and call it good for now. Besides, its the low bass notes that kill door speakers anyways, and since you'll have the sub for that, you'll be good. Also, if you get 2 12's, please upgrade your amp. You want to match RMS ratings, not max ratings.

So say you have a 12 inch sub, that handles a RMS of 500 watts. Then you would buy an amp that also has an RMS of 500 watts, even if it says the max is 1000 watts.

That makes sense. I have to check that out. :)

I would say the better upgrade is a 4 channel amp with the front 2 channels going to some comps.....and adding a sub when funds allow. I thought the stock audio was terrible and some nice comps really started to reverse that. A sub only clarifed the fact that the rest of the stereo was lacking IMHO.

The price the initially quoted you was just a touch on the high side. While you didn't specify which line of Memphis equipment they were quoting you, odds are it was the cheapest stuff they make. They're not ripping you off, but not cutting you any deals. And that's calculating for wiring and labor too.

So how did the shop react to you pulling the Memphis gear out of layaway?

That amp is being sold with a free 4 gauge amp kit. It says it's full OFC too. Seems like a great deal.

You'll want this too.
