Connect steering audio control to new stereo

I'm certain this has been answered repeatedly, but I can't find an answer.

I have a 2005 focus. It has a volume/input control on the steering column. I put in a new Kenwood bluetooth stereo. The car has two stereo connectors, one large one and a small one. I only used the large one. I didn't use the small one at all. The new stereo works just find, but the volume/input control on the steering column doesn't work (I didn't expect it to). Is there some way to make it work with an after-market system? I assume that it is what the smaller connector is used for.
