2002 ZX5 after market radio dimmer???

I have an 02 ZX5 with an after marker radio. I installed it myself. Not hard but now i am confused. All the diagrams I have looked at keep telling me the dimmer is N/A but when I turn my headlights on the dash dims down and I have an adjustment knob to adjust how bright I want the dash lights. Anyway I'm curious to know which wire I can splice my radio into so when I turn on the lights at night I'm not blinded by my radio. I can't find which wire actually dims my dash lights. Would that even work? Any advice will be appreciated.

Most aftermarket head units have a brightness that can be adjusted, depending on model of course. I've never heard of a aftermarket deck being able to be dimmed by the factory dimmer switch, but that doesn't that it can't happen, just that I've never heard of that. Surely someone will know better than me. Have you tried adjusting the brightness on the deck itself?

Yea there are two options with the dimmer in the new unit. Either dimmer ON or OFF. So I just keep it on all the time. But its still blinding bright at night. So now I'm where I am now. Just trying to figure out if it will dim down lower if I can splice the dimmer wire into something and it work. Just a small project.

There should be an orange or orange with white wire on the harness for your aftermarket radio that can be used for the dimmer. If you bought the harness adapter for your car there should have been the same wire to hook up to I believe it's orange w/ white to orange w/ white on your 02. If that doesn't work then you can always try changing the color to something less harsh on your eyes like red or green. Otherwise the dimmer should be in radio settings every radio I've ever done has had one

Yea I have the dimmer on now in the head unit. But I didn't know if the lights would get even lower when head lights were turned on. I'll look and see what I have in there. And no I didn't buy the harness I just made my cuts and neatly spliced the wires together.

As you said the dimmer wires is n/a the only way to get to it would be to pul the headlight switch and test the two or three wires at the dimmer switch to see which one it is. It should be variable voltage going from 12 to 14 volts down to about 6. Then just run a wire to the dimmer wire in you aftermarket radio and see if that does it.

Sounds easy enough. I'll post back what I find out. If it works or not.

Well after further investigation it seems to appear that my head unit will not support the dimmer. All I have is the ground, constant, ignition, and what ever else to power the unit. And the speaker wires. And thats coming from the back of the unit. So just on my assumption there isn't anywhere to hook a dimmer wire.. is it possible that this is why it has in internal dimmer on and off? Or am I over looking something?

Well I'm such a looser haha. My head unit does not even offer a dimmer option. There is no wire at all on the unit for illumination. So I guess it is what it is.
