MK3 Sony Sub easy upgrade
So, I took my existing Sony sub out of my car and replaced it with a Kicker L5 sub and box that I had from a previous vehicle. I initially just wanted to see if it would even work with the existing amp.
The Sony sub appears to be a 2ohm load and the L5 is also 2ohm capable. I had to rewire the box in order to accommodate this since the Kicker box only provides a single connector and is 2ohm wired internally. The Sony sub has two sets of connectors.
I am honestly amazed at how well the factory amp drives the Kicker L5 and will keep this setup for a little while until I get around to adding a more powerful sub amp. I did have to make a crappy sort of custom connector to connect to the existing wiring but I will correct that soon enough.
The real lesson here is that the OEM amp is very capable of driving an aftermarket sub, I imagine this is mostly thanks to it being 2ohm stable.
