07 ford focus 9.0" Tablet

So I'm not sure if anyone has thought about doing this before on here but I just did it to mine and it turned out great! Great head unit replacement haha and super cheap. Let me know what you guys think and I may take time to do a write up on it.

I've wanted to do something similar for while with a 7" Nexus, which should just about perfectly fit the standard opening...So i have some questions about your setup!

1. What is powering the speakers, tablet to an amp or tablet to a hidden head unit?
2. Are you using 3.5mm headphone, usb or bluetooth for audio out?
3. How is the tablet mounted? It looks as though it is not permanently attached, which would be nice to be able to take out of the car for other uses/security.

Yeah I think a 7" would be about perfect for the stock opening however i used a 9" so its a good bit bigger than the opening, its actually sitting over the opening and a little bit of it is open on the right side to let the wires come through to charge it and audio out, and I had to move the stock cigarette lighter because as you can see it covers that as well haha.

As far as mounting it it is permanently attached, I was trying to come up with a way to have it removable quickly but decided against it for times sake and its only a $60 tablet. Honestly it is taped on there haha :) I used some 3M extreme mounting tape on the back of the tablet to the bezel and then I used some duck brand duct tape (by far the stickiest) to tape it on the front and make everything match and give it a little border and stuff. It may sound ghetto rigged but I promise that thing isn't coming off ever. Honestly the duct tape isn't doing much but making it pretty and helping a little. I put on the 3M extreme mounting tape first and then shook it as hard as I could over my bed to try and make it come off the bezel and it wouldn't come off, that stuff is SUPER sticky!

I ran the tablet to a 4-channel amp thats powering the door speakers, and I just used 3.5mm headphone out to an AV adapter to plug it in the amp. I plan on getting an equalizer soon so I can tune it a little better. I replaced all the door speakers with 6.5" alpine type E component speakers and using a 400watt 4-channel amp. even without the equalizer to tune it much it still sounds alot better than the stock speakers.

You should consider coming up with a way to easily remove it. Chances are you will run into some problems in the summer. That 3M tape is softened by heat and the plastics in the car are petroleum plastics so its likely the tablet will end up on the floor.

Heat is also bad for the battery which could cause it to explode or ignite while inside the car.

Good luck!

other installs i have read in my research use a small usb amp so the audio out is digital and some have equalizer settings on them. that would involve making sure your tablet allows an on the go dongle, more often than not a custom rom/rooted device (which is the route i would go if i do it.) You might be able to do some equalization in the tablet itself too.

didnt think about the heat mac, good point. even with my window tint and sunshade, car gets plenty hot in summer.

I haven't had much problems with the heat so far, I actually put it on a few months ago in the late summer and I just re-wrapped the tape a week or so ago because I liked the graffiti instead of the design I had before and both the duct tape and the 3M tape was still very attached, I even messed with it some on hot days to see if it would come off and it didn't move. Not to say that after some heat and some time that it wouldn't eventually wear out and fall off, but if you tape it securely enough you should notice it coming loose before it ends up on the floor.

As far as the battery spook it would have to get pretty hot inside your car to ignite a battery. Old lithium ion batteries used cobalt oxides which had a tendency for thermal runaway at which point they could self heat and cause a fire or explosion. New lithium ion batteries utilize different materials that are much less likely for thermal runaway. Even with the old batteries that had a tendency to do it your car would have to reach at least 140 degrees F to start the process, and with new batteries the temperature now has to be much higher. Once again still not impossible... just unlikely

And as far as the mini usb amp for digital out I haven't seen those before, your going to make me do some research and spend some more money now haha

Never thought about that, velcro isn't actually a bad idea i'd just have to figure out where I could put it and enough of it to hold it on the bezel securely, Have to see if it could hold the weight on its own, great idea though
