So the install is done! Time to recount the experience.

Here's what the finished product looks like. Jensen75 and I did a good job, and I'm quite happy with the final project. But I will never, ever, install another double din on a MK1.

So we started with this. I acquired Jensen's SVT radio bezel (we ruined my silver one trying to apply vinyl as clumsily about as a virgin tries to please a woman, and subsequently used too much force) and his silver HVAC controls because, why the not.

The head unit did not slide right into the stock bezel - not that we expected it, given the stock Audiophile is the weirdest goddamn size I've ever seen.

It seemed simple enough.

Jensen knocked the top lip out with a dremel, and we set to work.

Here's the part where I wish I took more pictures.

This head unit did not fit the bezel easily. But we made it fit, using both part of its provided aluminum shield and the Metra kit. When we did have that all squared away, we set to the wiring.

Or should I say, Jensen did the wiring because I'm an idiot who's just good for holding shit and occasionally punching the dashboard (which is eventually what secured the radio in the dash, by the way!). This part wasn't too bad, just tedious - though I will say the wiring harnesses Crutchfield provided made it super easy to hook in the stock subwoofer.

After the wiring was finished, we did a test fit. And it was then that we realized our day was going to get a whole lot worse.

The MK1's radio holster, like everything else in the MK1 interior, is not straight. Which is great for styling. Not so great when you're trying to fit a massive object in there, when it never came that way from the factory. So trying to get the radio in at an angle only made things more interesting.

The unit would barely slide into the dash, even without the massive outer sleeve it came with. We would target specific areas and precisely cut some of the plastic that was impeding the unit's path.

....

That's what I'd like to say. I'd also like to tell you it worked. But it didn't. So we took out our knives and started hacking. And trying to fit the radio again. And hacking. I lost count of how many times we pulled out the goddamn hazard switch.

Eventually, we though we'd had it. But then the top left clip of the radio bezel wouldn't seat properly, for reasons unknown. So we tried a few more cuts, to little aid. Now, at this point it was 9:30 PM, and we'd been on the project for ten or eleven hours. It had rained most of the day. We were tired. He was hungry.

I was frustrated. So I did what I do best.

I punched the shit out of the top left of the radio bezel. It seated. We concluded that our work was done.

That's the view from the driver's seat. I wish I had taken pictures of the carnage lying beneath, but you understand how driven we were to keep cutting and making the damn thing work.

On the plus side - hey, stealthy microphone placement! Easiest part of the process.

If I was going to ever do another radio install on a MK1, I'd go single din. The only reason I didn't was cosmetic - I though the tray underneath the radio looked ghetto. But screw that - fitment must be a hell of a lot easier.

tl;dr: get a single din with SW output and BT, enjoy life.

Yes, single DIN is the way to go. Besides that "ghetto" tray can be very useful.

I just put a a double din in mine as well, there was lost of hacking and cursing. I also had the same problem on the same corner. No telling what is back there that you can't see it's hitting lol I also got a crappy dash kit, thought I got the metra but ended up getting something else in the mail. Looked alright but now that everything is in it's staying lol not really I'm going to change it out eventually, it's partially blocking the volume knob and that just errks me something awful, but it wouldn't fit any other way.

Wonder if a double din will fit better in a Mk 1.5?
