Can we add SYNC afterwards?

Hello folks,

I have a Focus 2012 SE without SYNC, and I am wondering if it's possible to add it without paying a huge sum of money. Beside the internals, I guess some some parts of the dashboard should also change (for ex. the usb input, steering wheel buttons, screen?, etc).

After buying the car I begin to think that SYNC could actually be handy :-)

Thanks

Without paying a huge sum of money...probably not.

Thanks, that was my guess too. I guess it's too integrated to the car :-)

I believe there is a kit through Ford Accessories, last I checked think it was around 150 bucks

I didn't realize you could buy a '12 focus without the basic Sync package... I knew MFT was a huge option, but I assumed Sync was standard.

When I bought my 2010 ford fusion from a ford dealer the salesman said I could buy the sync package at a later date for a price. He said it was between 200 and 375 if I recall correctly.

Hmmm. I checked the fordparts.com. It seems that sync accessory is only for 2009 model cars.

I'm considering this topic somewhat seriously now. It seems that all you'd really need for a functioning Sync system would be the cabling, the USB Aux plug-in, microphone, and the Sync module, all of which are shown in the picture below. I already have a 4.2" screen and stereo faceplate from a 202a car with Sync.

The head unit/cd player has two big plugs in the back, one of which is unused on my car and I'm betting that the unused plug is where the Sync module plugs in to the head unit.

This picture of a Ford built retrofit kit for the Fusion seems to support that idea.

I'm willing to bet that you could even use most of the Fusion retrofit kit for the Focus. It seems to have everything that you would need (module, cabling, USB, etc.). The only downside is that the microphone couldn't be placed in the stock location the Focus has it, but it could be cleanly mounted somewhere on the dash.

Am I crazy for wanting to try this?

EDIT: It seems the Fusion has 3 plugs on the back of the head unit. Perhaps its retrofit kit wouldn't work.

Hmm, I was thinking about trying to change out the factory head unit with another factory unit that had the sync module built into it. I just received the radio today and haven't even taken it out of the box yet. Ill keep yall posted on how well it works.

I'm thinking that Ill also have to change my steering wheel and rear view mirror out with replacements that have the sync equipment into it as well but we'll see.
