Angry 2003 ZX3 - Center Arm Rest - Broken Latch

So the armrest works fine (it doesn't get locked in the up position, which is apparently pretty common), but the latch on the lid is useless.

The plastic tab that provides resistance for the latch (to keep it closed) is cracking at the base, and my damn latch doesn't stay closed.

It is absolutely infuriating to hear that latch jostle around, and I'd like to fix it.

Aftermarket arm rests are about $100.
All I need is a damned plastic tab (would it really have hurt their bottom line to use metal?).

Anyone have a simple fix? Anyone have a working plastic tab? Anyone have the top lid with a working plastic tab? Anyone have a stock armrest that'll fit a 2003 ZX3 Hatchback?

I'm getting close to 45 K (at about 41 now, don't drive much, but I should get there in a few months). I planned on taking the scheduled maintenance list for 45 K and going to somewhere OTHER than a dealer (to avoid excessive costs). But this is something a dealer should be able to fix easily (for cheap / free I hope...), and I do have a few other minor nitpicks (hatch back rattles, right front speaker cuts in and out, etc) that I'd like to get taken care of at some point.

But that damned latch vibrating all the time is gonna end up causing some road rage at some point. I'll take a few post-its and jam them in there today to try to at least silence it, even if I can't get it to properly latch.

Same thing happened to mine.....latch is loose/rattles. I fixed it with a block of soft foam between the top of the plastic lever, and the bottom of the arm rest. The foam puts pressure on the lever, but compresses enough to allow the latch lever to lock normally (you can't really see the foam, or even know it's there). No more rattles....

arm rest latch remedy

I simply went the the hardware store and bought a spring for $.60 then compressed it and positioned it in between the the latch and top. It works great, compared to the dealer cost of $252.00 for the entire unit.

I bought a spring too.
Of course I was lazy and bought it online.

Somehow I ordered giant, tough springs by accident.
Oh, and I somehow got 5 packs of 2 instead of 1 pack of 2.

So I have 10 giant springs with no purpose.

I ended up folding a post it note and wedging it in there.
