2005 ZX4 Rust on Rear Axle

I recently spotted a lot of rust on my rear axle of my 2005 ZX4 ST while it was in the shop for an unrelated matter. It only has 49000 miles on it (first owner), but I live in the harsh North Eastern climate with lots of snow and salt in the winter.

Is this something that needs to be fixed now or soon? If yes, what needs to be done and what should I be budgeting for that? Or should I attempt to remove the rust with rust dissolver and a rotating wire brush?

Thanks!
-J

P.S.: Otherwise in great shape still, inside and out, so would be a shame if that bit of rust would result in costly repairs that would make me think twice about keeping it :-)

Looks worse than it is. Just wire brush and paint.

Yea, I'd scuff it the best you can & use some kind of sealer on it & not some thick gooey sealer. Wow a stock '05 st,,,,,,,,,,,

Thank you both! What kind of rust dissolver (maybe naval jelly?) and paint do you recommend? I already bought what probably is a rather gooey underbody rubber spray.

I also read about Por15, but that stuff is super expensive. But maybe worth it?

Yeah, it's all stock, no modifications, except for an audio input jack I installed myself underneath the dash years ago. I even have the original multi CD radio in it.

I take it it's rare to either see a Focus this old or without modifications?
