Brake Pedal/Handbrake squeak - driving me insane!

Right, I've had an issue with my Focus S 59 plate for a while.

It squeaks from the rear (and what sounds like directly underneath) when my brake pedal or handbrake is released. Garage have had it several times and say they've cleaned and adjusted the rear stuff but no change.

Brakes work fine, it's just the squeak that is driving me mad now. One thing to note is that if the handbrake is on then the brake pedal doesn't squeak, which after looking around online, makes me think it's a rear drum and/or handbrake cable issue.

It's been in to the garage a few times, every time I'm told something has been cleaned or adjusted, but clearly something needs to be replaced - or at least I'm guessing.

Any advice would be much appreciated. This is driving me insane!

I am unsure of your symptom & if it matches this;

One known bad area for MK1 (maybe MK2) crazy squeaks is; hand brake cable passes through a large rectangle clamp. This spot can vibrate & chafe and cause some strange noises. Adjust this cable chafing spot by temporarily adding any type of padded material to see if your squeaking noise disappears.

Unsure if your "Focus S 59 plate" brake cable is configured like mine/ours in the USA.

Thanks for the reply, Marde.

I'm not too sure, I'm a complete newb when it comes to cars so I have no idea where I should be looking for the handbrake cable.

Is it one of these?

No. I do not see it in that pic. Have someone sit inside car and set and release the hand brake while you look under the car & at one of the rear wheels. Do this, and you will find it quick. Follow the cable from the wheels to the front of car and suspect any/all spots where the cable is touching something.

OK, I'll have to take a look! It did sound like it was coming from the drivers-side rear wheel when a friend was testing it the other day, so I'll look there first!

Our problem area (for squeaking noises) is a clamp on the passenger side.

the question is did they reverse everything for right hand vs left hand drive under the car or is our passenger side his driver side from under the car?

Oh that was funny. Yep, his driver side is the same side we call passenger side.
