Angry 1 Hour Project..my A$$

Just had a day from hell and needed to vent. This rant has to do with replacing my rear brake shoes and painting the drums on my 01 ZX3.

Woke up at 7:00am feeling good that I was going to get to spend some "quality time" with my focci. Jack the car up, remove the rear tires, and go to remove the four bolts that hold the drum onto the rear spindle. 1 out of four -- no go --to tight, 2 out of four - same - 3 out of for-- nada, 4 out of four...WTF!!!

Dig out the trusty breaker bar, get on one and after an abnormal amount of force one of the four break lose. Ok time to whip out the air gun. Bolt three and four break free. Bolt four rounds out. Remember this is on one of the drums. Still have the other to do. Figure screw it. Ill deal with that after I get the other four bolts out of the other (right side) drum. Same freaking problem!!!!

Drag out the cutting torch...Cut the two stubborn heads off the bolts, and now at 12:30pm, I am finally able to move on with the maintenance.

Rest of removal, cleaning, painting, and replacement go without a hitch and only takes about an hour. So after 6 and a half hours I have now replaced my shoes and painted the drums.

Why in Fords infinite wisdom would they decide on using a rediculous setup like this? Out of the four bolts that hold the drum on, two are blocked by the spring, and one is crazy close to the brake lines. If I didn't have a swivle head ratchet and other not to common tools at my disposal I would have been screwed.

Brakes work great and there is absolulty no noise. The drums painted up nice (just used black) and look presentable again. Girlfreind is pised b/c It not only consumed my entire day, but made my ass tired. Didn't feel like doing anything tonight other than a heavy shower and bed.

Well kids, thats my story...hope all who go on this journey fair better than I have.

damn, that sucks about not being able to complete a project within a specific time-frame. My girl get's mad at me too with the hourly DIY projects sometimes.

I never had the opportunity to change my rear brake drums so I'll note the frustration you endured.

I did paint my brake drums and it was a 10-15 minute process for me because I did it the easy way. After jacking up the car just leave the E-brake off. Spray and rotate the drum as needed. I also masked off the rear shock and sprayed the sheet-metal that surrounds it. It's an excellent touch especially if your car is white, and ford decided to paint metal that's so Noticeable and obnoxious since it's behind the wheel.

PB Blaster

With this stuff, I get it at Walmart usually, no bolt will ever be too tough to remove. I've used it for a while and never had a stuck bolt/nut since.
