High speed shimmy

I have an 04 focus wagon. Aftermarket wheels that are a little bent but balanced out okay. Here's my issue. With stock wheels (no bends, good tires) or the aftermarket wheels the car wants to shimmy/vibrate at speeds above 50MPH. The worst range is 60-70MPH and it's not as bad around 80 but still there. The shimmy starts in the rear but soon the steering wheel vibrates as well. This is intermittent and I can't figure out any triggers. It will shake hard for 5-15 seconds and then smooth out, then start again. At 65 it is almost unbearable (bad enough I'll drive over or under the speed limit to minimize it). I had it aligned and the wheels balanced today but it didn't help at all.

Any ideas on where to start? Bent tie rod? bad control arms?

Thats possible w/ the aftermarket wheel/tire combo. The stock wheel/tire combo he says does the same. Whats the condition of the tires/ wheels? anything bent would show up w/ the alignment. Try a different set of wheel/ tire combo.

I'd check all the suspension. My moms had a problem like that when her strut bearings went.
Also check for tire wear on the stock wheels. The wires inside the tire can split apart, causing these vibrations and you will see wear on the tire if that's the case.

My buddy drove into a ditch and his car would vibrate on the highway. It ended up being a bent tie rod on the passenger side.

check your bushings. they could be causing the issue due to excessive play.
