2006 Focus Front Brakes Sticking

For about 3 weeks now I can be driving along and the front disc brakes, both of them, begin to close on the rotors. The longer I drive, the more the front brakes engage. I didn't believe it at first, but I've proven it to myself. After searching the Internet almost everyone is told to replace calipers, brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. I wish it were that straight forward. I've seen that this problem could be related to a faulty vacuum booster unit vacuum hose non-return valve. I check that tonight and it appears to only flow in one direction. Has anyone else ever experienced this and know what the issue is? Nothing is leaking. There are no lines collapsing, they are all metal until they get to the last foot before connecting to the calipers. This one has me stumped. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Apparently no one knows the answer so I diagnosed myself. Hopefully this will help someone else. The vacuum brake booster is a large diameter cannistor that is divided in two by a diaphram. Vacuum is created by the intake and pulls a vacuum on both sides of the diaphram. As you push the brake peddle, air is allowed in on one side, lowering the vacuum on that side of the diaphram. The other side is still under full vacuum. That full vacuum side is pushed by the lower vacuum side and moves a rod going to the master brake cylinder, assisting the driver in applying the brakes. If a small leak occurs on the side of diaphram where air is allowed in during braking, the brakes will engage ALL BY THEMSELVES. I replaced the vacuum brake booster (tremendously difficult due to no room to pull it out) and that solved the issue. About $90, and there is a core charge.

I had the same problem with my 2003 se 5 speed. All kinds of weird intermittent brake dragging over months. Tried the usual fixes of brake flex lines and calipers. Finally tried a used booster and problem was fixed . You are right, it is very tight to get it out.

Exclamation Help please

I am having this problem! I think everything has been replaces except the booster. This last time the auto shop said it is the brake light switch. I just got it back. I was not having any problem with the brake lights. This has been going on for about 6 months. The brakes or calibers have stuck so bad they have smoked twice. What parts have been damaged from getting so hot all these months? How do I convince the shop it may be the booster? Thank you!

Moved to the Brakes, Suspension & Chassis section.

Lack of free play between pedal push rod & brake booster can cause trouble as well as booster problems mentioned by the OP.
