Accident - what happened?

Hi, I'm new here and tried to post in "general technical" but it kept logging me out when I attempted to start a new thread. Anyway - this is the issue (BTW I have 2000 Focus ZX3) -

I was driving 65-70 mph down center lane of freeway (3 lanes) - in right lane there was a piece of lumber in the center of lane. Car in that lane suddenly cut in front of the driver in front of me, causing him to slam on his brakes and thus me. I braked and turned the wheel to try and get in far left lane but lost total control of wheel, causing my car to veer into left rail wall. I had no control of car and car spun across the three lanes into the right guard rail with me facing traffic (me on shoulder). So - it's a miracle really that no car hit us through this spinning process. But - somehow my control arm(?) (don't know much other than the very basic about cars) - became detached and my axle came loose.

I'm attaching pictures of the broken one (drivers side) and still attached (passenger) but can get more pictures if needed.

My question is - did something come loose when I hit the brakes causing me to lose control or really, does anyone know what happened here or has anyone else had a similar issue?

Also - had heard rattling on that drivers side for quite a while, by wheel.

Any help is appreciated. rotor also cracked. (amongst other things I'm sure)

Thank you!

(ok. how does one go about attaching photos. all i see is a way to link to URL of image)

Hitting the wall on the left side is what probably bent or broke the control arm and brake disc. The spin is probably what caused the half shaft to pull out of the diff (now that the control arm was broken the hub could easily move outward taking the shaft with it). I doubt very much the initial panic braking broke anything.

ok. thanks, Geezer. just wasn't sure why I lost control of steering after braking. so wasn't sure if I hit because of the initial damage or the hit caused the damage. appreciated.
