Autocross wheel size

I'm thinking about running autocross but right now I'm sitting on a 215/35/R18 wheel. Is this a good think, will it hurt me, or does it really matter.

I also have my stock set of 15" with stock tires. I could switch them out to go run.

Thank you for your time and I appoloigse if I'm repeating a topic but I looked at other threads and was not able to find anthing.

-Ben

It would be far wiser to run on the 15s. They probably are a little lighter, will have less rotational mass, keep you in a stock class if you have no other modifications, and tires are far far cheaper.

I have intake, exhaust, lowering springs and stiffer struts and shocks. So, I'm already out of the stock catigory. but would it hurt the 18's?

Hurt the wheels? Probably not. But you will put accelerated wear on the tires (well, any tire will see accerated wear from autox), and I bet 18" tires aren't cheap.

i have 18s on my car, and by the way the car handles compared to the 15s, i think i would compramise the weight issue for my wide 7.5" wide tires . i stick to the road like glue with these rims and tires.

BUT, yes... 18 in tires are EXPENSIVE AS HELL. trust me ive gone thru too many...

i remember the pain of the 225 x 17" tires i was putting on my last car... makes your checkbook cringe everytime you scrub some tread off.

It sounds like you are just starting out, so I would say stick to the 15's, at least until you are confident about your AutoX skills. Most novices go out there and rip the crap out of their cars, and it takes time to learn to slow down, drive the line, and be controlled. Not to mention that you will have better gearing...

^^^Good advice^^^
Are your 15's just sitting around with nothing to do?
IOW, if they aren't for winter tires or anything else, by all means, mount some better tires to them for track use, and for getting to and from the track only.
Just make sure you get some miles on them before your first event.
You need to scuff off the release compound, and get them heat cycled a few times before hammering them on the track.

What size/type are your stock tires?
IIRC, that's on a 15X6 wheel?

I am going to put the stock wheels back on for the winter, I live in nebraska and winters are snowy and slick.
Stock tires are the IIRC on the 15x6.
I'm not by anymeans thinking about going pro...yet...in autocross, I just want to try it out and see what the focus and I can do.
Thanks for the advice

any more comments?

Hey, maybe I'll see you around sometime. I live in Des Moines, and our region has been hard up for sites. I've been wanting to go to the next Nebraska region event that's in Counciltucky.
