One Lap of America

Hey all you race fans!!
Has anyone seen one of these events? I saw some of the cars going to Hallett OK last year but didn't get to watch the track event. I am trying to convince my wife to do this in 2007 for our vacation. She doesn't see how driving 3000-5000 miles in 8 days could be considered a 'vacation' but she is slowly warming up to it. I bought my 2004 SVTF with this event in mind. I started autocrossing this year and am trying to get her involved so she will catch the 'bug'. Just wondering if any of you had heard / watched / competed in this awsome re-creation of the Cannon Ball Run. Here is a link to the website:

Was involved directly for 3 years (2000-2003). My son, Brian Smith, won 3 years in a row (2000-2002) followed up with 3rd in 2003 and 2nd last year. You better have a good co-driver that you can live closely with for a week and one who can stay awake to drive while you sleep in the passenger seat during the night drives between events. You learn to sleep for the length of time it takes to run out a tank of fuel, then switch drivers, always trying to keep the track driver as rested as possible. 3 hours in a motel bed is a real delight! Stop where one can fuel the car and the other grab food so you can eat on the road. Shower at truck stops if you have time. What a week!

Wow 3-5000 miles in 8 days. It is so much different now.

I ran in 1987 when we went 9000+ miles in 10 days. I entered in the TSD grouping and finished 15 overall of all 69 enteries (including the performance division).

That year we started in Det. went to Jackson, Mi for a TSD and then to Indy for a visit to the track and a run at the dragstrip for the performance div. Also everyone got one lap of the Indianpolis Motor Speedway behind the pace car.

From there to Denver for another TSD at night in the mountains and then 11 hours to go 770 miles to Vegas for a lunch and time stamp.

After Vegas we run to Barstow for another TSD and then up to Laguna Seca for the performance div to run that track. Leave there and drive down the Highway 1 to Los Angels. Got there about 6pm, spent the night in a hotel, drivers meeting at 6am and leave for Phoenix.

Run another TSD in Phoniex and then head to Laredo Texas and the BFG proving grounds for some gymkana type stuff.

Leave Laredo and run to Jackson, Miss.. Run a TSD there and head for Alanata. Get there about 8pm, spent the night in a hotel and left for Road Alanata right near there. Again the performance div runs for time and we get one lap behind a pace car.

Left there and headed for somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountians where we ran another TSD and then headed to Darrin Connetict. Left there and head to the Northern corner of Penn and Ohio were we started another TSD down to the big road course in southern Ohio (forgot the name). That was an all night 400 mile TSD event. The performance guys ran the track and we all headed back to Det for the finish.

Started on Good Friday and finished the following Sunday.

And this all started when a friend called to tell me he had a two car factory team entry for the 1987 One Lap and wanted me to navigate the second car. The bad news

It was for YUGO. Yup I was a factory Yugo team driver. I said keep repeating the part about all expenses paid.

from the right seat

Sweet, so we do have some experianced Lap Dogs here. I am trying to gather as much info as I can to prepare for the event, and would like to ask some questions PM if I could oldmansturbo and dam3816. I will only get to 2, possibly 3 open track days this year, but I am planning on 1 a month next year. I know autocross is not open track, but I can use the training. I'm going for the fun and the challange and do not expect to place very high overall, but I would like to place well in the econo class. My wife will be my co-driver (she has not bought off on going yet ) and I have considered a third if it is over 4000 miles. This years event looks pretty tame in comparison to previous years (longest leg 400 miles vs 1400 miles last year) so I would go with just 2 if it is like this in 2007.

Congratulations on your son's victory's oldmansturbo!!! 3 years in a row!!!

1. Are the sponsor logo's that are required to be displayed on your car during the event permanent? If so how can you take them off? My car is my daily driver and as much as I like the race car look, the unwanted attention I would recieve here would be most 'unwelcome'.

2. Race gas is available at most venues. How do you swap 93 to race gas for the time trials? Would I need to bring some 5 gal cans and a siphon pump?

3. To trailer or not to trailer... It would be much easier to put all the junk in a small aerodynamic trailer and just unhitch at the track, but how about the SVT pulling one through the mountains and such?

All I can think of now, will be more in the future. Thank you for your time
Mike

please....rest stops, shower at truck stops......please......straight run....dont eat or sleep or do nething just keep driving. With carful training and determination it is possible. But for water so u dont pass out.....hook up a few camle backs in ur car so u can drink without taking ur hands of the wheel. LOL......id try it but im in college and i have no urge to put about a years worth of miles on my car in 8 days.
