Tire pressure

Hi. I was reading tips for tire pressure and I tried it here in Europe. I don't know if AutoX in the US and here is different, but when I had 40PSI front, SVT has been understeer king. I was really slow....everybody here thought that I'm crazy to run such a high pressure. They were around 25PSI front . So now I'm like.....what !?!?!? Why, such a huge difference?

The first question is "are you running street tires or competition tires?"

Assuming you are running street tires, the "rule of thumb" is that you start with 10 psi over stock and adjust from there.

If you are experiencing understeer, then I would recommend a few things:

1. Bump up the front tires in 1LBS increments until the car becomes "neutral" in handling

2. Run 1-2 LBS MORE in the rear tires than the front to increase oversteer and rotation

3. Adjust based on the course. Unfortunately, every course is different and you will have to adjust on the fly. Remember that the more dramatic change you make to the tire pressures = a more dramatic adjustment to driving style. This is not an easy thing to do in an AX environment with limited runs and time.

It only comes with experience.

The important thing to remember is to have fun. Don't be discouraged. The course, tire wear, environmental conditions (weather, surface, distance, etc.) play a key role in how well (or how poorly) you perfom.

In an AX environment, there is little room for error. So, start small and see what works, but keep in mind that even minor adjustments can result in a negative outcome.

I always like to walk the course and envision how I am going to approach a given gate and adjust the 10psi increase according to the most technical/difficult portion of the course.

Chances are, if you do well in THAT portion of the course, you will be able to adjust to the rest with relative ease.

Good Luck!

Great advice!

Experience is the key. I've shown up to an autocross, looked at the tires (ok, they have some air in them), and won my class, on street tires. But that's a LOT of seat time. Before that, I actually found that my SVTf and I agreed on 30psi all around and just left the tires there for the street.

Your pic shows you on a track? Do you do track days as well as AutoX?
Running on a road course at higher speeds the tires will heat up more and usually gain up to 10psi. I start out around 28 - 30 psi (depending on weather and such) and it is sometimes around 40psi after 20 laps.
Adjustments are similar to autoX, but once you found your 'zone', half pound adjustments might be all you need.

Yes I'm doing both.
I agree with that 30PSI on street tires....event before this one I had around 30 and managed to finish second in my class. This year I did 6-7 autox, one hill climbing and one road track events.
