ax question
a quick question about auto x. i was talkin to one of the local 2ners here and he was tellin me that if i do auto x anymore( i went once) that i would need to replace cv's, cv boots, shocks and maybe even axles. what the heck. is this true?? by the way the fastest time of the day was 36.somethin and my time was 42.2.

thanx guys

Um, no - not unless your car is needing them to begin with.

2ner? Do you mean tuner like he knows what he is talking about? Did he actually look at your car?

Out of that list, I could only see CV joints as getting higher wear from AX than regular street use, but you've got to realize this is, what, 6 runs at 45secs/run versus the daily wear and tear you would normally have.

I'd only believe him if all these parts are high-mileage on your car and he was recommending you replace them. If they need to be done, they need to be done whether you autocross again or not.

Let me guess - he'll be charging you for this [read]

Any extra wear on these parts would negligible/minimal at best. For a course lasting about 45 seconds, if you ran six times per event, you would have driven only 4.5 minutes per event. An average club might have 8 events per season. If you went to every event, you would have driven only 36 minutes on course for the entire year.

eventerke is right. Unless your car already has a lot of miles and these parts are already worn out, this local tuner doesn't know what he's talking about.

thanx guys thats what i thought. yes he(the 2ner) ownes a shop here. the parts listed only have 93000 kilometers on them. i no longer deal with him. i got screwed on my shocks. once again thanx for the help. oh ya i have fallen in love with auto x. cant wait till next season.

60K on the odometer.

Original inner and outer CV boots/joints.

Original rotors.

The tuner is WAAAAY out of his knowledge base.

I run a MINIMUM of 8 AX events every year and at LEAST 4-5 track events.

The focus is the most solid vehicle I've ever owned even with the hard driving that comes with AX and track use.

I ran my first time today, 168,000 miles on my axles, and they held up fine. I ran 62.1, ftd was in the 52's i think, and most rx8's were running 59's. So no I was not taking it easy. I was most worried about the axles, and then the tie rods, both of which will need replacing soon anyway regardless of autoxing...

i had put new oem rotors and pads on a month b4 the event and on the way home i had little to no brakes. so i need better ones. other than that all good, thanx for all the help guyz[ffrocks]

illinipo 11-19-2007 08:49 AM

You may only need to bleed the lines.

DirtyDeeds 11-19-2007 09:50 AM

^^ I agree. Sounds like you might need to bleed your brakes. If you have a lot of miles on the car, it would be a good idea to bleed out that old fluid/air and get some new stuff in there.

One event should not have affected your brakes in the way you described.

faster_than_u 11-19-2007 08:44 PM

thanx guys ill try bleedin the lines when it gets warmer. i still wanna get new pads and rotors tho i was thinking ebc slotted and dimpled rotors w/red stuff pads. that should do the trick
