How long to idle between runs

At my last autocross in June, It was really hot like (85 degrees) and between runs, I left the car on for a few minutes then shut it off because I felt that the engine wouldn't get any cooler with the heat and long wait. Is it safer to keep it running for 10 minutes between runs or shut it down after 5 minutes? I wan't to do what's safest, I don't wan't to overheat my car.
** BTW I do prop the hood and turn the heater on(AC off).

You really shouldn't encounter any difficulties with overheating unless your car already has a problem. Autocross runs aren't long enough to make this much of a worry, even in very hot climes.
Don't waste another minute waiting on parts, or anything else. Just get out there and start racing! You will suck at first, and you will be slower than many other cars, but the only thing you will regret is not starting earlier...

^^ +1 Not much really to worry about as far as overheating goes.

However, between runs, I do let the car run and pop the hood. By continuing to cycle coolant through the engine, you are cooling it. Shut it down and the heat remains. Opening the hood allows for more venting of the heat.

I use that as an opportunity to check tire pressures and the like.

However, don't drive with the hood up in the paddock area. Many clubs (mine included) frown on that sort of activity.
