I took my wife on a couple fun runs at the last Autocross I went to a few months ago and now she wants to get into it when I get back from deployment, however she is not comfortable driving the SVT, or any stick shift for that matter, so she wants us to get an automatic car for her that would also be our backup car if the SVT or her Blazer breaks down.
So my question is simple, what is a fairly good automatic autocross car for a novice? We would want somthing used, easy to drive and reliable, it will be stock for awhile, except for some better tires.
I am leaning towards a Prelude but I don't know how good they are as an autocross car, I just know she likes the way they look.
Thanks for any help you can give us.

prelude are very good at autocross you can get more info here preludepower you can find an older 2nd gen which is a very fun car to drive for next to nothing mine went 300k+ miles before i gave up on it.
also older civics and CRXs do very good at autocross as well but just dont look at good IMHO.

I agree with killalude. The prelude is a very good car for autocrossing. just stay away from the 4wheel steering models. expensive to fix and half of them dont work anyways.

also look at mini cooper's, golf's, integra's, a zx3, mazda 3 for fwd cars. older infiniti's, mazdas, vw's are all good, and are lighter.

That's great news. Good luck finding her a car to drive.

Thanks for the help guys!
I'm not interested in another Focus because the car will have to be an automatic and an automatic Foci isn't what we are looking for, if she could comfortably drive stick we'd just use the SVT or buy my parents Miata.

Miata, or Mini Cooper or ZX3 are my $.03

go with a miata

Nothing is more fun and better for autocross than a Miata (even with an automatic). They're purpose built for the sport.

why not keep her in the focus family..stock zx3 or sedan with an auto and a tune to firm up the shifts. that will put her into H-stock, that's probably what my soon to be wife will more than likely do ( hopefully i can talk her into a stick.haha!. she's also looking at mini coopers too. it's great when your spouse shares your passion for racing, what more could ya ask for![thumb] [clap]
