I don't know about that dude but I find that I get lost in a sea of cones. It seems herky jerky and really really only focuses on 2 areas of the car handling and brakes. Where as a road course is more of a true test of the entire car. That is truly how I see it but others may not.

The local track websites aren't very good about posting much useful information. You have to go through the club websites to get anything and there are a few of them.

Given that we're in the middle of Winter, most clubs won't have their 2007 schedules posted yet. These will start to pop up around Feb, March.

Anyway, here are some websites for you to check out...
http://www.mcscc.org/ A collection of nine clubs in and around the Chicago area, they have a great time attack program and they run a couple of HPDE through the year.

www.caroc.com Chicago Alfa Romeo club, they usually run 2 or 3 events each year.

http://www.cgimotorsports.com/ Drivers school run out at Gingerman. Gingerman also offers open lapping sessions during the week. The track is about 2 hours from Chicago.

http:/// New organization, they will be hosting a lapping day at Autobahn in 2007...full track.

http://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde/index.html NASA provides both HPDE and Time Attack, but I'm not sure what they're planning for the Chicago area in 2007. This is a newer region for NASA.

There are a few others that I can't remember right now, but this should get you started.

Try some bigger autocross courses. We have one here that is 2 miles around and you WILL use 3rd gear.Takes a few times to get used to reading cones, but it is really easy if you ignore ALL the cones and concentrate only on the key ones.Sure, race track time is great, but usually MUCH more expensive than A/X.For $50 bucks,we get 9 trips around ,4 practice 5 timed for score.I really enjoy "working" the course. It is really great to see other peoples lines and how their cars handle certain sections. If you want to get better, you have to watch the good drivers. Most will allow you to ride with them, but be warned, they like to try and make you barf....(I love A/X)

I started with autocross, and loved it, but after doing HPDEs and track days, I enjoy them more. Sure they cost more, but you get tons more seat time than any autox. $300 gets you 150 minutes on track over a weekend, or $2 per minute. Autox, you get about 4-8 minutes of track time for $25-$45, so on average, its about $6 per minute, and your whole day is committed for those 4 minutes.

Sure I still autox, but its track weekends that I really enjoy.
