Need Help: Washing Engine Bay
I've been searching around on different ways to clean the engine bay, but what parts can you not get wet? I'm guessing the fuse box and nothing inside the airbox since I have the resonator removed. What other parts should I stay away from? Would it be ok to rinse the entire bay with a hose (no nozzle, just the water flow) and then use some degreaser to get it clean? I also read on here not to get the alternator wet? Right now it's a stock engine in a 01 ZX3 with hood insulation.

I'm going to try to follow that, but not use a hose. Just maybe wash the front of the block and get the rest with a compressor or a damp towel.

Looks like a good idea to me. Let me know how it goes, I also need to clean my engine bay.

When I clean my engine bay, I spray a little bit of Simple Green here and there, let it set for a couple of minutes, then use a towel to wipe everything down.

I was reading some of the degreaser stuff that I had and decided against it. It had a lot of warnings about not getting any electrical stuff wet and there isn't one spot on that engine that doesn't have a connection to something. I cleaned it with a compressor and then use Tuff Stuff on all the plastic to get it shiny.

Nice, I'll try that next time. I got some teflon no-touch spray for my tires that I used today. It came out real nice.

So tire spray on the engine bay? Ill try it. I drive my car year round in Canada so it gets pretty dirty.

Haha, you wil never get it CLEAN like that. Here is how I cleaned mine last week.

Bought of bottle of commercial strength liquid degreaser at AutoZone. It is like a 1 gallong jug, its a purple fluid. I hooked up my craftsman pressure washer gun to my air compressor. The gun hooks up to my hose, the air compressor, and the bottle of degreaser.

I just blasted the whole engine, everything in there. I looked out for the air box and fuse box, but didnt avoid them. Damn, SOOO clean now. EVERYTHING is clean, not just the top of the engine.

I drive 16 miles of dirt every day behind guys with trucks but not always....they know I love to take the lead in my ZX3. My engine gets VERY dirty!!

I take 1 oz of dish soap and hot water in a spray bottle and soak everything. I let it sit a few minutes and then simple hose the engine off with the garden hose. I avoid nothing but spend little time near the fuse box.
I have 100k on the car now and the engine you can eat off.
I have used commercial degreasers and pressure washers but I'm not convinced that my method a little more often is not any less effective.
One more thing, always with an ice cold engine!!! Never run and then bathed!
