: Buying 2007 ST (Cnd)

Hello fellow Focus lovers,

I think I'm finally gonna be buying a 2007 ST (Canadian model).
I'm still hesitating on a few options as follow:

- Color : Either Black or CD Silver
- Seats : Standard or Leather/Suede
- Moonroof or not
- Side airbags or not
- Electrochromic Compass mirror w/out homelink, with temp
- Trip Tunes
etc...

So basically, pretty much every option ;)

I like Liquid Grey but my wife's ZX5 is that color.
I like her standard seats, but are the leather/suede better? Why no lumbar option?
I like the look of having a moonroof, but how practical is it? Leaks anyone? A few of my friends have monnroofs in other kind of cars and say they could live without it no problem. Some of them have leaks too!
Side air bags I guess are a good safety option, better than having a moonroof, especially with my two boys.
The mirror is kinda neat, but I guess it's more of a gadget than anything else. Any have it? Like it? Worth it?
Trip tunes... I have an iPod so this sounds like a good option.... but I might simply replace the radio with a new Jensen VM9021TS head unit.

I was gonna get a 2006-07 sel v6 Fusion, but decided to save a few bucks and get two toys for the price of one.
Here is my other toy coming soon : http://www.can-am.brp.com/en-CA/Vehicles/Renegade/

Thanks for your input.

P.S. What kind of hitch can I put on the ST so I can haul my ATV :)

Hello Gravter, Welcome!

I like Liquid Grey but my wife's ZX5 is that color.

That's personal preference, I like the Black or Infra-Red w/SAP1.

My car:

I like her standard seats, but are the leather/suede better? Why no lumbar option?

I live in the Northeast, so to me Leather=Cold! Lumbar supports? Seats work fine for me.

I like the look of having a moonroof, but how practical is it?

Nice to have on a mid-summer's day I guess, but I wanted to keep the cost down. I don't have it.

Side air bags I guess are a good safety option, better than having a moonroof, especially with my two boys.

I don't have them, but I'm also not married and don't have kids. If you can afford them, get it!

The mirror is kinda neat, but I guess it's more of a gadget than anything else. Any have it? Like it? Worth it?

I think I have the heated mirrors? Got my car just coming out of winter, so can't really guess as to their overall value.

Trip tunes... I have an iPod so this sounds like a good option.... but I might simply replace the radio with a new Jensen VM9021TS head unit.

If you already have a head to go in, then just get the basic radio. I was looking for an SAP1 ST, and there was only one within a hundred mile radius of my home and it didn't have the upgraded radio.

Otherwise, get the best factory set up (no muss, no fuss, no cutting).

What kind of hitch can I put on the ST so I can haul my ATV :)

Dunno, the only thing I haul is me!

Also, you might want to set aside $1,000 for a CAI, catback exhaust, and MarcyMotorsports soon to be released intake manifold.

You'll still be emissions legal, and have about 180hp!

Nice lookin' car frank.

When i mentionned mirror, I meant the one inside the car (rear view).
It can come equipped with compass, temp display and homelink.

thanks for the aftermarket options... sounds good. Just wondering what I'll do first. I was maybe wanting different wheels, like 17's.

will take all these into consideration and will be posting pics if/when I get it :)

thx

Keep 'em coming.

LOL Mine's just a plain 'ol mirror.

I was maybe wanting different wheels, like 17's.

Good idea.

Also, I forgot to mention getting a spring lowering kit. ST definitely sits up too high, so lowering her an inch or so should be EXTREMELY helpful to her handling prowess.

Yeah, lowering is definetly an option...
Just can't go too low, otherwise I will have to "plow" through the snow ;)

P.S. I'm gonna try to get some winter tires and rims included in the deal.
My wife's '04 ZX5 haddles great in the snow with proper tires.

Living in the Northeast USA, I can tell you that I had no problems with the stock ST's 16" All-Season tires. Now if you want to put on 4 snows, that's cool.

For me, the vehicle's tires was one of the selling points of the car. My previous '04 SRT-4 came with 3 season tires. I had to buy a set rims/tires for the winter, and changing them in/out every season got old quick ... LOL

Also, here's a pic of my ST's window sticker for reference:

Frank has given some key info about the options you want... but I'll add a few things since my car is pretty much fully loaded except for the the street appearance package and moonroof.

About the color you want... the black is nice but unless your willing to buff and polish and wax your car all the time I wouldn't get the black. I personally wanted the CD silver but the liquid grey was my second choice and thats what was available. I say get the silver. [thumb]

The standard seats are nice, but I liked the leather option the Focus offered so I got it... the black leather with the suede inserts is really nice. Frank also made a great statement about it being cold and leather isn't a good match, I agree so thats why the heated seats was also a must for me and they heat up quick and they get pretty hot and it's the whole seat that gets hot.

The moonroof option you are contemplating over is a very touchy subject for me, I absolutely wanted a moonroof but the dealer that I went to didn't have an ST with a moonroof... I got the one that was as loaded as I could get at that dealer. If there was one with a moonroof I would have gotten it hands down. But I am trying for some good times at the track and those moonroofs are really heavy so I am somewhat glad that I didn't get one. Although, I am kicking myself in the butt because right after we took possesion of the car I looked online at a dealer about 20 miles away and there it was, the ST I wanted... CD silver, leather, moonroof, audiophile system, but it didn't have side airbags which was an option I wanted also. So if you are going to want some good times with that car on the days you go to the track then I would say don't get it, but if you just want a peppy everyday driver, get the moonroof.

With the side airbags and you having two kids, get them, they are a great saftey option and I wanted them for the extra safety.

The other two options of the rear view mirror and the trip tunes, I dunno anything about them since those options aren't offered down here so I am not going to say get them or don't get them.

I hope I helped a little [thumb]

And just be careful about modding, it gets addicting... I have spent over $4,000.00 on just what seems to be a few things.

I have:
-F2 intake
-Cosworth header
-Focussport sportexhaust
-SCT XCAL 2 tuned by Wayne
-Tinted taillights
-Focussport fiberglass front lip
-Steeda STS
-Tinted windows
-I had the Steeda billet grilles but since took them out and sold them
- MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE but those are some of the more expensive mods that I have on my car... but trust me it's worth every penny and every minute you have invested in your car... [:D]

And next up. . .

I have the CD Silver, Moonroof, leather, Audiophile system, side airbags, traction control, pretty much everything EXCEPT heated seats which I would have gladly paid for if they were included (keeps the g/f happy).

Just today it was in the mid 70's and I was cruising along with the windows down and the moonroof open. Not as nice as a targa but still worth the $700 to me.

I also have the SAP. Frank and I are both buyers who would not have bought this car had it not been for the SAP on the sedan.

I like CD silver because it doesn't really show the dirt unless you get within 10 feet of it. Matt's Liquid Grey would have been my other choice. Black is hard to keep clean, especially for a daily driver. Red is nice but if you get the SAP package, expect to attract the attention of many law enforcement officers!

No matter what you get, my recommendation is to SKIP all the options much like Frank did with the exception of the side airbags -- they just plain pay for themselves. Everything else is nice to have but ultimately you don't need it. These cars depreciate VERY quickly. A used '06 ST is going for around $11-$12k at auction. The more options you pick, the more depreciation you have. That $700 sunroof might be worth $200 when you drive off the lot (ignore KBB and Edmunds -- we're talking reality.)

The leather is nice. The suede inserts really keep you planted.

The stock wheels are boring and really take away from the sporting nature of this car, in my opinion. I replaced mine with 17" SVT 5-spokes and BFG geForce KDW2 tires. Nice grippy combination. Ultimately, however, the stockers are round and come with reasonable Pirelli rubber and will do the job just fine.

The audiophile system is great but not excellent. It doesn't get super loud but it's loud enough. The fidelity is good but not excellent. It's a solid factory system but there are better after market solutions for probably a bit more money. For $795, it's not a bad deal but I don't find that it's $795 better than the one that was included in my F150 which is just a CD/Cassette head unit with 4 speakers.

The one thing that stands out about the Focus is the "fun to drive" factor. It's not the fastest and it's not the slowest. It's not the sexiest or the ugliest. But from a value standpoint for a car you plan to keep for a while, it's a sweet little ride.

I now have 10k miles on mine (since March) and I've had no issues with it. Just fun, fun, fun. Fuel economy has ranged from sub-20 MPG to 30 MPG. Yes, sub-20. Spirited driiving and >75 MPH on the interestates will suck gas. But I followed that up with 65 MPH driving for the next tank and hit the 30 MPG mark.

Oil changes are a little more expensive because of the synthetic blend oil but you can increase the interval to 5000 miles or so.

If you like to drive, you'll love the Focus. If you're looking to trade very couple of years, a Honda might be a better choice.

Yeah, I agree with Jerry. The audiophile system was petty much worth it, the only thing I don't like about it is when you turn it up pretty loud, the bass starts to go away and the vocals start to become more present... sounds like you have all the bass turned off and it gets annoying... [:)]

Incredible info guys.

Thanks for taking the time for your generous input.
I'm 99% sure it will be CD silver with leather/suede seats.
Oh, and in Canada, we have the Canadian winter package, so this means heated seats and mirrors [;)] ... as my wife's car has.
Also, the ST comes standard with the "GFX" package, which is like the SAP.
Only thing I don't know is what wing comes with it! Rally or sport?
I'll have to check with my local dealer. Not sure which one looks best. I really like the rally one, but the other is sleek looking! Decisions, decisions.
Yeah, the depreciation is terrible... so I'll be buying and keeping it for sure. Especially if I'm gonna be modding it [:)] too bad the Focus doesn't have Xenon HID option [:(]

Very nice interior Duffman, it's what make me wanna get the leather/suede. Just one question, Why no rear headrest?
I'm sure I've seen ZX4's with them up here. Might be a Canadian law thing!?!

Still debating about the moonroof. I could save that money and get 17's, a CAI, window tint or the Jensen headunit I've been looking at [:)]

So, tomorrow I'll go see my local dealer and see what he can locate for me. He has no ST's on his lot. I don't even know if he ever sold one before!
I'm probably gonna be the first to have oneof these in town [;)] Maybe he'll be ordering it directly from the factory with the options I ask for without compromise.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks again [thumb]

Hid's. Well what do you expect on an entry level car? Mine are aftermarket which I took off my old car.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e103/duffman355/Random/HIDGarage.jpg

And I saw one Canadian SE on here with your so called GFX package and he had the large rally spoiler like mine. The heated seats and mirros are nice. The mirrors actually get hot and I was like whoa, at least when the rear defroster is on. If you were looking for a fairly cheap set of 17's, MaxFOcus and I both have 2003 SVT wheels which you can usually get around here for 300 or so. Or 2004 EAP SVT wheels, the 15 spoke wheels in dark grey look awesome on silver Foci [thumb]. And here in the STates, I believe the the ZXW (wagon) has head rests.

I'll have to add one thing Gravter. If you get the side airbags, they only cover the FRONT seats so don't think your kids are safe on the rear seat. Have a look at Ford.ca in the safety secton of the Focus.
I do tend to get the most options when I buy a car. You have to think that someday you'll sell it. Look at what you're doing as a buyer: if it doesn't have it, I don't take it. I say : if you can afford it, get it. My ZX3 is almost loaded and I enjoy every options. Happy buying [thumb]

The lack of rear headrests was one of Car & Driver's nits about the 2005 ST when they reviewed it -- and rightfully so. Ford cheaped-out on this when they built the Focus. Unless your kids are 5'8" or better, it might not be an issue.

I just have my passengers wear helmets. [eek]

As for availability, they do seem fairly rare. Only just recently did I find a couple of dealers in the DC metro area that had a couple. And those were the only ones since I bought mine in March when the stealer only had 2 on the lot.

Well, I'm awaiting a price for a CD silver 2007 ST.
I decided to can the moonroof and get snow tires and wheels in the deal instead.
As for the headrests, they are included because the ST up here comes with "comfort group" which includes rear headrests.
Now, I'm only trying to stay away from the '07 Fusion, LoL.
I noticed the other day they have 0% interest on it and 500$ delivery allowance on them!
I configured a '07 Fusion I4 SE with their new apperance package for only 2500$ Cnd. more than the focus ST !!!
Is the I4 in the Fusion the same motor as the ST?
Would gas mileage be the same? This is not good... I mean, another decision to make, LoL. More room would be great with my small family. I would be losing heated seats though ;) I wonder if the Fusion is any good in the snow...
I should never have went back on ford's website, lol.

Yep, same engine. And the prices on the Fusion are pretty good. Fuel economy is slightly better in the Focus: (23/32) Fusion: (19-23 city/26-31 hwy). Most ST owners get between 20-30 MPG with their cars. In two weekends I went from about 19 MPG to 30 MPG just by varying my driving style (full tank comparison.) Since the Fusion is heavier, you can bet it won't be as good as the Focus. But since the Fusion isn't as "sporty", it might just equal out. [:)]

Well, my local dealer can't find an ST within 1000Km with the options I want.
So, he said he can order it but will take 6-8 weeks :(
This means I'll be getting it as a x-mas gift, LoL.
I was getting very tempted to get a Fusion, but I'm losing toooo much on my trade-in so I need to cut down.

Thanks again for all your input :)

P.S. Can anyone tell me what the x-plan price would be for a ST with leather as the only option? Canadian price would of course be preffered ;)

I bought mine on the X-Plan and it was $17,700 out the door with a $21,400 sticker after the $2500 in rebates and obviously with taxes and tags (no doc fees with X-Plan.) IIRC, it was ~$100 over invoice BEFORE the rebates. I might have negotiated a better deal on paper but when they added their $289 doc fee, I was better off with the X-Plan. The big problem with the Focus is that there really isn't a lot of room for the dealer to move so X-Plan doesn't seem that great. It was the rebates that pushed me over the top. I would have never actually paid $22k for a Focus. So if invoice is $15861 and leather is $387 (invoice), that's $16,248. Added taxes and tags and the X-Plan $150 (to be safe).

One thing they tried to nail me on was financing. They came out with a 9.9% rate (back in March) and I told them they could keep their car and to consider mandatory drug testing as a condition of employment. (I have excellent credit.) After much negotiation and proving that 5.5-5.75% was a more competitive rate, they got it for me. Every percentage point has a measurable impact on the payment amount. No matter how good the deal is, you really don't know the deal you got until you factor your payment times the number of months you'll pay for it. A $17k ST sound great from a negotiation standpoint until you find out you're paying 12% and the payment is $378.15 for 60 months. Now that $17k car is $22.7k. Or more than 30% more. Go in prepared with your own financing if possible. If you get a 6% rate, the payment on $17k is only $328. That's $50 a month. Doesn't sound like much until you multiply it by 60. That's $3,000.

DISCLAIMER: All figures in U.S. Dollars. Canadian moose hides and high quality maple syrup not considered in this calculation.

Gravter

The ST here would cost me 22059$ Cnd. (with leather) MSRP.
Now add 6% GST and 7.5% PST = 13.95% in taxes to be paid.
So, I would have to finance 25136$ (Cnd.). Ford Canada has 0% on the Focus right now, so it would cost me about 419$/month for 5 years. Not bad... and this is at MSRP. I wanted to know the x-plan to figure out what kind of barganing I could pull off. I imagine they don't make as much on a 20,000$ car compared to a 40,000 truck! So, maybe I can get a 1,000 off at the most which would make the monthly payements about 399$.

But here is my complication... I have a trade-in and I'm losing about 3500$ on it! Yes, I owe 3500$ more than what it's worth... well, so they say. None the less, if I go ahead with my tradi-in, I pay no taxes because my trade-in is worth more than the car I'm buying... but I have to add 3500 to the car! And when you have a trade-in, the dealers don't bargain very much.

So, it would look like this: 22000+3500 = 25500+0% interest / 60 months = 425$/month.
I am still ordering the car, but might try to sell my other one before it's delivered for about 500$ more than what I have left to pay on it and then get me a better deal without a trade-in...

Hope I did not confuse anyone.. I almost confused myself, lol.

Well, my ST has been ordered since last week.
I won't be getting it until sometime in December [:(]
I just learned also that it won't be coming with the "rally" style rear spoiler [:(]
Don't get me wrong, the original one is nice, but I would of liked to have something different. It's not even an option [:(]
Atleast it has the rear diffuser, chrome exhaust tip and the different front facia.

Oh, and I'm picking up my new quad "atv" tomorrow [headbang]

Congrats on the ST order. It sounds like you got the SAP 2 package. I keep thinking I want to trash the rear spoiler (rally - SAP 1) and put the SAP 2 spoiler on it (like the SES) but I like the fact that it's different. There's not ONE other car like mine in the area (that I've seen in my 10,000 miles since March.)

Quad looks good too. What brand is it? I really like the pushbar/winch on the front.

The quad is a Can-Am, aka Bombardier.
It is an Outlander 800 XT.
After I'm done paying for this quad, it will have cost me almost the same as the ST, LoL [screwy]

I guess I'll take the ST as it comes but if I get tired of it, I might find someone with a CD Silver rally style that would like to trade [;)]
It will have heated leather seats/mirrors and thats about it.
I took no other options, like the moonroof. I put that money in the quad instead :)

I might have to get a "hitch" installed on ST so I can haul the quad.
I think I've seen someone on here with an ST with a U-Haul trailer behind it.

Not sure about that hitch idea. With the rear diffuser it kind of eliminates the hitch option. That and the factory really doesn't recommend this car for towing.

I might get bored with my rally spoiler about the time you're tired of the way your ST comes. [:)] It's $196 for a standard spoiler from the stealer plus painting. It's just not worth it to me to swap things out for that much money.

Um, sure, Frank.

As for snow tires, I don't think you'll need them with the SAP because that front bumper is going to act like a plow anyway. I have summer performance tires on mine (in VA) and will likely NOT swap them out with the stock Pirellis for winter unless we have snow that lasts over a period of days (rare). I'll just drive my F150 if it snows.

Not on my car ... it's not lowered.[;)]

You had better drive your truck!

I had the stock 3 Season BF Goodrich KDW2's on my SRT-4, and with just an inch of snow ... traction was absolutely horrendous.

I'll call Ford today and see if I can get the spoiller on the right in the above pic [;)] .. don't tell that to my honey [B)]

My gf's zx5 has snow tires for winter.
She got hers in march 2004 and one morning there was a little bit of a drizzle and she landed in the ditch... well, side of the road. No damage, but it convinced her to get snow tires for the next winter.
Since then, she's been through 2 winters with lots of freezing rain without a problem. Winters up here have been bad lately with freezing rain [mad]

Oh, I see, you're in Canada. That's different (I guess).

I live in central N.Y., so I'll be driving this Winter as I did my last one.

With the stock 205/50R-16 Pirelli P6 all-season tires.

They were just fine.[;)]

I might be getting my ST sooner than expected.
I found one about 150 miles from me on the internet!
It has the same options I want... plus moonroof.
If all goes well, by the end of next week, it will be in my yard :)
I hope the dealer can still cancell the order... I did not put any money down.
I realy can't wait another 6-8 weeks since my truck will be gone next week!
Oh well, will keep you all posted...
Oh, BTW, here is a pic of my new ATV :)

You want the moonroof to let all the snow in? First you need snow tires because you're in Canada and now you want the moonroof. . . because?!?!? [:p]

But getting it early . . . that would definitely be better!

Yeah, I don't realy want the moonroof, but it's only gonna cost $400 more.
Also, mine is still 6-8 weeks away and my truck is going away in a few days, so this way I wont be on foot. My gf has odd hours @ work and with our 2 boys, it would be a big challenge to coordinate it all.
I will only know for sure in a few days if I'm gonna buy this ST.
But odds are, I will :)
Maybe I can get them to include snow tires for a few bucks, at 0% interest [;)]

Well, as you can see, I did not get the ST with the moonroof.
I'm gonna stick with the one I ordered and be patient.
My truck is not gone yet, due to the neverending papers needed for Ford Credit.
Atleast the "paper work" is beeing done, so I can say it is realy on its way out of my driveway. A friend of mine is taking over my payments and giving some cash for a few extras that are on the truck.

I've been logging on here just about every day doing lots of reading and I'm simply getting over anxious for the delivery of my new wheels [:)]
I still have about 3 - 4 weeks to wait... this is killing me. I hope I'm not gonna be disapointed when I get it... You know, like when your young and it's x-mas, and your opening your gifts only to find a pair of socks and not the toy(s) you asked for from Santa! LoL

Just had to let you guys (gals) know what I'm going through.
There is still no snow on the ground and kinda hope it stays like this untill I get my ST. Atleast I got my ATV to play with in the meanwhile... Man, does that thing ever go!

Thanks for reading

Well, today is kind of a sad day... Yup, my '05 F150 FX4 is gone [:(]
The buyer picked it up today. Now, I'm driving an '03 ZX4 SE "auto".
It's a loaner from the dealer while I wait for my '07 ST.
He said it should be in within 2 weeks... God, I hope he's right.
I loved the truck, but it was too much money for what I used it for.

Is it 2 weeks later yet???

Max_Focus

You're almost half way! [;)] (Just read this every day and eventually I'll be right.)

That's super dealer service if they're going to just let you borrow their car for nothing for two weeks until yours comes in. Margins aren't that high on the Focus.

The F150 is a much nicer vehicle (I have both) but the Focus is WAY more fun to drive. Until you need to haul a 42" flat screen TV . . .

Gravter
11-29-2006, 10:05 PM
Yup, I can't complain about the service. All I need to do is put some gas in the car.
They even know I will be using the Ford X-Plan on my ST [;)]
So, the margin is even smaller.
When I'll get confirmation on the exact date it will be arriving, I will be getting an appointment to get the windows tinted.

Nice! You don't have that surfboard on the back. I didn't read the entire thread and I guess it's a bit late to give my feedback on the leather/suede seats. I think those seats look nice but the materials, especially the leather, is major crap. My driver's seat is looking increasingly worn, after only 7.5K miles, and I don't weigh that much. The rear seat is just a cover, seriously, you can just pull it off. I workout on a regular base and get sweaty, you have to cover the suede before sitting down cause it'll stay wet forever. I'm not sure what material is used for the non-leather seats though but I would love to have something more durable than this 10ct china leather.

Gravter

I personnally hate red interiors, which is what would of come if I had not ordered the suede/leather, so I'll be loving the inside of this car no matter what.
I know it won't be like having italian leather hence the price difference!
If I'm going to be working out, I'll take a shower before going anywhere.
During summer, I'll be using the AC, so no need to sweat there!
But then again, I don't own it yet, so I can't realy comment on it I guess... but I will soon.

Not to confuse people, I'm sweaty after a tough workout and then have to drive home, where I take a shower :)

Congrats on the car, I like the front bumper, very sporty.

I'll add my two cents...

- Color : Either Black or CD Silver
Go for Infra-Red, it matches the interior the best.

- Seats : Standard or Leather/Suede
Standard. Leather= cold and hard in winter, sticky and hot in summer.
- Moonroof or not
I would just because it's nice to have a little sun coming in.
- Side airbags or not
I read somewhere (can't find it now though...) that they didn't make the Focus much safer. But, if it puts your mind at ease, go ahead.
- Electrochromic Compass mirror w/out homelink, with temp
Pass... You don't need that! Santa is north, USA is south, anything else is unnecessary![grinking]
- Trip Tunes
Eh? What's that?

I also went and got the Sony Audiophile stereo (subwoofer, 6 cd changer, etc.) because I like a good sounding stereo! I have a 93 Golf now, and if in 14 years there hasn't been a leak, there isn't going to be one. What I'm saying is leaky sunroofs are, for the most part, a thing of the past. Besides, if it leaks, ya got a warranty!

Hope it helps!

I'm not worried about the seats beeing cold in the winter since its got the Canadian Winter package which includes Heated Seats, heated side mirrors, traction control...
I'm picking it up this afternoon... I'm gonna put it in the garage when I get home and inspect it from front to back, side to side... lol.
I got $1,500 off with the help of the X-plan and the Ford e-certificate [:)]
