It's not doing much for me.

But it is much better looking than the Edge.

What Ford needs to do is come back with a fun affordable offroader to compete with the Wranglers, FJ Cruisers, and Xterras. But that would mean making a real 4x4 SUV, and Ford stopped doing that a decade ago.

its alright, maybe an expedition replacement.

Oh, and how about a Ranger replacement, Ford Gods?

SuperFocusMan
09-16-2006, 05:02 PM
^^^^ that would be great!!!! Ranger though?? Wouldn't that in turn
phase out the explorer as well? If I remember correctly the explorer was based
on the ranger.

Kneel
09-16-2006, 05:17 PM
The current Explorer is not based on the Ranger anymore. The Ranger is very old now. People still buy Rangers for real off-road use, and the Explorer chassis is not made for that.

Toyota is selling new 4x4 Tacomas that get close to 20mpg on the highway. And Ford is closing plants, because they have totally neglected markets for more fuel efficient vehicles with off-road capabilities.

I read somewhere that the rest of the world has a new Ranger, with a turbo-diesel option to boot!

Are they really calling it the Fairlane???? If they are going to bring back these "classic" name vehicles, why not make them look good, and what they were in the first place? The Fairlane was not a mini-van, it was a car (even if it was a boat of a car). Ford needs to continue in their designs like they did with the new Mustangs. Do retro right. But that's just my opinion.

no the name is being changed, its just they left it like that, so dont flip 07xx5gfx :P

Looks like a stretched out Honda Element... I don't see much potential.

The rear suicide doors would be interesting, but I think those aren't legal in the states. I have no freaking idea what Ford has against sliding side doors. I thought that the Freestyle would've been more of a suburban commando vehicle, and a more intelligent crossover between mini-vans and SUV's if it would've had sliding doors. Those make loading/unloading things much much easier.

The whole industry should start calling crossover's what they are: wagons.

I guess this concept won't make it to production now. Image the gas mileage this baby would get!

You want to know the truly saddest part about this vehicle?

By the time Ford brings it to market in 2008 or 2009, Toyota will have something like this to offer. And, Ford will still be trying to play catch-up.

http://www.clausencars.com/TOYOTA%20FT-SX.jpg

Check it out - Toyota is even copying Ford's new grill and headlight designs, but putting them on a cooler looking vehicle. The Japs are getting to be as bad as the Chinese with copying on some things, but they still have a quality perception lead.

Now go look at at a new Edge and tell me how cool it looks.

The Fairlane has alot of potential, and some pitfalls too.

Potential: Right now, the cross-over market is made up of some good vehicles (Murano, CX-7), but they all share one common design trait: indecisivness. All of the vehicles have approached the cross-over design with existing trends. Therefore, they all look like bland SUV's with rounded edges and collapsed suspensions or bland station wagons on stilts. The Fairlane will be the first to bring boatloads of Americana to the table. I think it looks like the 300 of cross-overs.

Oh, and one more thing: the guy that buys the bland CX7 look-alike Toyota is not even going to look at a hip morsel like a Fairlane. The guy buying the Toyota is saying, "I've been told that cross-overs are hip, and I want the most reliable (ie vanilla, boring) one that I can find!" Therefore, it's really irrelevant to the whole discussion

Pitfalls: Everything behind the stylish bits. If Ford packs the Fairelane with a crap engine, crap transmission and shoddy build quality, it will be a failure. The good news is that Ford seemed to turn the corner lately. I haven't heard anything bad, in terms of reliability, with the new Fusion or Mustang. Moreover, their new V6 seems like a winner, and they have the sweet 6-speed auto box too. The only thing that I would like to see is a really nice 4 cylinder in the Ford line-up. For some reason, Honda and Toyota seem to get the same power out of their 4s, but with 15% better economy.

So, this is not vanilla?

That Toyota concept makes this design look wanting, IMHO. The Fairlane design already looks dated.

yea it can be good, put some 24s on it and about 5000 watts of power to 5 12inch subs, and a sick paintjob, it'll make the cover of trucking some day.

just my 2 cents

I said no to the poll but I have an idea on new models coming out these days. It's all about marketing. Why do you think they are bringing older car names like the Charger, 300, GTO, Camaro, Fairlane, Zephyr and so many more? Baby-Boomers! Most of them are near retirement, well establish and have the money to threat themselves. These names bring back memories to them since they were there in the fifties ans sixties.
