: non Focus content: my wife crashed the Subaru
ModemJunki 09-07-2006, 05:25 PM Wow, my wife was cruising around a bend, got onto about 1/4" of wet leaves covering the road, and lifted off the throttle in a bit of panic (one should not ever lift fully off the throttle when one begins to slide in a manual-gearbox all-wheel-drive vehicle, instead one should feather it off to maintain control...).
She says she was going about 30 "or so". If you can't see from the picture, the mailbox was entrenched in a cement post and painted bright yellow.
I'm bummed. To my eye it's mostly cosmetic, except for that right front tire leaning inwards. Both airbags went off (my 13 year old daughter was in the front passenger seat).
Daughter has a stiff hand and sore wrist, but is otherwise fine. I'm just venting here because we're moving to a new house in 8 days... I sure don't need this right now...[?|]

StealthGray 09-07-2006, 05:47 PM I'm sure you're giving thanks that your wife and daughter are OK. Still, what a bummer, and with a move coming too!
People can forget (NOT saying your wife did this!) that wet leaves can be like ice. It's one of the things I do remember from Driver's Ed, going out on a leafy side street in the rain and trying out some skids...

CrazyMatt 09-07-2006, 06:17 PM WOW....
That was only at 30!?
Fordcus Fan 09-07-2006, 06:19 PM Too bad, glad everyones allright, but alot people get a false sense of security with awd, stability control etc...When it snows here 8 out 10 wrecks are awd/4wd cars/suvs.
Ah that sucks, man... even if it is all just body damage it's still going to be expensive, what with the deployed airbags.
Glad to hear everyone's alright, though.
WitchCitySVT 09-07-2006, 08:25 PM Good to hear everyone is O.K. . Good luck on the repairs.

Yep. And do note I posted that she was going 30 "or so". My wife tries to drive the wheels off that thing, the Forester is pretty scooty with all that low-end torque mated to the 5-speed. Takes the SVT off the line every time.. for about 2 seconds.
Up close, you can see that it was the right front corner of the car which caught the reinforced cement post, not the front of the bumper. It literally hooked the car around.
So the "crumple" section of the bumper assembly and frame rail was not involved in controlling the crash energy, it was all absorbed by the lighter sheetmetals of the fender and fender wall, and then finally the wheel/tire combination.
Ya, and we only owe about $2500 on it, would be paid off in a week or two after we settle in to the new house. [V]
Hopefully it's fixable, we really like our Scooby. (And I'm surprised no one commented on the fakie license plate I slapped on there).
I'm going to bed. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

At least, if not more. I think the strut tower is bent, which means the front end took a really good whack. [xx(]

.
I do collision damage estimating for a living. I could write you a fairly accurate estimate from your photo. What are the body labor rates in your area?

That I don't know. We're in zip code 60110, if that helps....
I should add that the body shell appears OK, all the doors open and close freely and the door gaps look fine.
01CobaltTiburon 09-09-2006, 10:38 AM It's totalled, no doubt about it.
babyface 09-09-2006, 10:49 AM not necessarly, Subies are worht quite a bit, even older ones. I'd say you could probably get that fixed up,
just dont feel bad. My mom took our brand new Legacy 2.5GT wagon, with a manual box put in instead of the auto, and ran it into a light pole at 50. (Said she was swerving for a dog)That thingy was less than three months old, i loved that thing.
As a replacement, we got a base model auto, instead of the loaded GT stick we had.
u were lucky
ModemJunki 12-05-2006, 10:41 PM Wow, I've been away from the board for a long time.
The Scooby was totaled. We got an Escape as the replacement. Guzzles more fuel, but we moved to a new house and the wife works 1.5 miles away. I'll miss the Scooby, it handled much better than the Escape, but the Escape is quite roomy and more - er, cushy, I guess is the way to describe it.
avengerc4 12-06-2006, 02:11 AM I was wondering why this month old thread reapeared lol...well congrats on the escape and good thing everyone is ok :D
StealthGray 12-06-2006, 05:15 AM Welcome back! Glad to see things are working out...
06ST_Germany 12-06-2006, 08:05 AM Wow, glad to hear your wife and daughter are ok. Looks like she hit the truck/small SUV sitting on the car's left hand side.
I would've replaced the Subie with a Legacy 2.5XT, ya know, the one that does 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds....
Then again, with an Escape you can haul something and I'm sure it's more comfortable on the highway!
Tom
mmmoose 12-06-2006, 09:29 AM LOL... sorry, was peeking in this thread and noticed the "AW NUTS" in the front plate.
:-)
delglenn 12-06-2006, 04:18 PM [:(] Sorry about the car. Glad everyone's okay though! At the end of the day, the car is just a car--the family you can't replace. [:)]
