I feel like I have bad gas mileage too. Well my mods are a magnaflow exhaust, bosch platinum spark plugs, and a drop in K&N. I dunno if these things make it burn fuel at a higher rate. I also do a lot of highway driving. Do you?

no performance mods?

you might want to get that checked out. do you do a lot of idling? do you drive like a maniac? do you rev your car alot?

i get about 35-36 mpg in my spi, mostly 65mph highway driving with no performance mods.

Ever since i got my 02 SE, It has always had excellent GM. Even with my intake and stock exhaust, it still gets good mileage. I'm pretty hard on it to. I geuss put some injector cleaner iin it to clear the injectors maybe. They shouldn't be clogged or anything being that it is fairly new and not an 85 datsun with 100,000 miles on it. I really can't think of what it could be. Get it checked!!!!!!!!

There have been a few instances of the fuel pump going out and the fuel level being incorrectly relayed. Is this it or are you really burning the fuel at that rate? I popped a fuel injector off once (my fault) and pumped out about 1/4 tank on the ground. I can't believe she didn't blow up that day......

I get low 40s per gallon with my SPI. Better intake and exhaust don't help you burn too much more that I'm aware of.

my mileage went up after I dropped the K&N drop in. I get avg about 33-36mpg on mine on the highway doing about 80mph on I-5 going up and down the state.

Last year before i put the K&N in I needed 2 tanks to get to Sacramento from LA (about 370 miles door to door). I put it in and I can now make it on one tank (okay i do hit reserve but its doable).

Make sure you keep your air pressure up in the right area and also make sure your intake and injectors are clean.

I have noticed that with my fuel economy, driving style plays a HUGE role. My girlfriend lives about an hour away from me, and at 80 mph it takes a little over a quarter tank to make the trip. Buy if I drive 65 mph, it takes 1/16 to 1/8 af a tank less to get there. One of the main reasons I bought my Focus was the gas mileage.

As an aside, another thing I've noticed is that when I have a full tank, it seems to deplete faster untill it gets to a half tank then the cunsumption seems to drop. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be the added weight of the fuel, and as it burns up the car gets lighter and therefore more fuel effecient?

UPDATE!

I went in and had my local Ford dealership do the Fuel Pump module recall work done, and I'll tell you my fuel economy is SIGNIFICANTLY better. The trip I mentioned above as taking a quarter tank now only takes HALF that much! Anyone having issues with their gas mileage should MOST CERTAINLY have this checked...It did wonders for me![thumb]

come to think of it.. when i did the fuel filter / pump change back in 2002 or 03 my mileage went up quite a bit..

i havnet had issues since then, but i might replace the fuel pump again just for the sake of doing so.. after all ford's paying for it right?

I also made an appointment for the recall, i have really crappy milleage right now. Maybe it because of the excessive reving, but god knows that doesnt contribute to fuel loss....But even without the reving, i get horrible milleage. And i agree that it seems when you have a full tank of gas, that it drops down pretty quick to half tank, then slows down quite a bit, i have noticed that as well.

I used to only get 260 miles to a tank, but after the recall I get at least 330. That recall did wonders for my mileage! Now I can cruise forever!(not literally, but almost)

The recall was done in less than two hours yesterday. The service was great and it fixed my hesitation problem I was having from driving at a constant speed at 50mph. Ford said I saved them 30 min. because I gave them the car with when the gas light when on.

The gas mileage has def improved. This will be a great since I commute to college.
