My wife is currently looking for a new car or midsized SUV, but she is having trouble deciding on what to get. My problem is that we are not wanting to spend a lot, but would like to get the best for the buck. She would like to get a nice people mover that is reliable, gets good gas mileage, and is not made with cheap materials. I wanted her to get a 2006 Rav4, but they are at a premium around here and some are going as high as $28,000. We would like to stay under $23,000, if possible. She is considering a 2006 Hyundai Sonata or a 2006 Mercury Milan. Anyone else have any suggestions?

if you have any interest in resale value at all, stay away from domestics and koreans.

My neighbor has terrible problems with his Tiburon- aluminum wiring. I'm sure it won't be too long before we see other makers with these issues due to the rising cost of copper.
No SUV, even a Rav4 gets better than 20 mpg: Big tires, big wheels, heavy construction, aerodynamics of a brick wall- etc. Not to mention the tires are usually much more expensive than car sized tires. If you're considering a Camry, keep an eye out for the 4 cyl. The one used in the Camry is the same 4 cyl that gave Toyota bragging rights for being reliable- the good old 2.4 L truck motor. The same motor appeared in Cressidas, Celicas, the trucks, and of course the Camry. This is the one that goes for 500k miles if you take care of it- and is impossible to find in junkyards. Toyota V6's are not good motors to purchase if reliability is an issue IMO.

Thanks for the tips. I will keep my eye out for one.

We test drove a Mazda 6, 6 cyl today and my wife really liked it. We also drove a 2007 4cyl Camry and she did not like it much. Both cars cost about the same, but the 4 cyl made too much noise and had way less grunt. There were no 6 cyl on the lot. We did not get to drive a Milan yet. Anyone know what 1/4 times are in the Milan?

Just an update to this thread. My wife picked up a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT with sunroof, custom grill, adjustable pedals, navigation, and of course the Hemi motor for $21,000 from a guy in KC. It is worth $27,000. It has 29,000 miles on it. He wanted to get a new BMW and was just asking what he owed. This is one nice car and has some good torque. For those that don't know what it is, here is a picture:
